We are back safe from GenCon 2011 in Indianapolis. We had a really great time, and are REALLY happy to be home with the kitties.
Along with the Masses of Humanity, we saw an 11 foot-high Abe Lincoln, poison ivy, scarecrow, cat woman (batman was not discovered, unless you count the guy in the boffer field that looked like a renaissance batman XD) several anime references, some WoW characters, and an endless stream of Kitties, of which we made ourselves a part. NyanCat was even there, although the guy pegged to carry the cardboard poptart didn't seem to thrilled with his lot in life. Ha!
The Ris and Cody were not quite expecting what they got. It is one thing to tell a person this is a gamer convention, but if you've only ever been to anime conventions, its hard to expect something different. GenCon is still very much a gamer's con, particularly table top, as their digital coverage hasn't quite caught up yet. (though i just discovered there had been a DDR room and we never even knew!!! Shit!) There was a separate hotel convention space (a small one) set aside for anime-specific panels, and we did go watch a Mystery Science Theater 3k-esque roasting of a Sailor Moon movie. But the anime was not so strong, so we spent most of our time in the dealer room.
At the end of today, given all that we HAD done and seen, we decided this is one hell of a place to spend a weekend if you DO actually play a table top game of any variety, and probably a small mecca if you're a CCG player.
Some of our most favoritest discoveries included;
Wasabi Anime; bringing what is good in anime back to the main stream.
Irondie; seriously neat digital-designed metal dice, some you can even paint!
Dragon pets; bug-eyes silicone arm-decor
A cthulu dice game, and dice bag, some neat rocks, and posters that make me believe in the world again.
(pictures of these to be here eventually)
p.s. Michael Moorcock is not only alive (although sans a foot for some reason??) but actually personally approved the movie being made of Elric, which, it was implied to me, is A Good Thing. I still haven't decided if I am excited or concerned.
Also, at least 16 people specifically asked the Ris and I for pictures (we were in full kitty after all) and we aren't certain on the number of stealth shots, but caught glimpses of at least three flashes aimed in our approximate direction.
We plan to spend the next several days de-socializing, un-packing, re-organizing, and assessing the final damages to the bank accounts.
But it was Fun!
