“The minute I heard my first love story I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don't finally meet somewhere. They're in each other all along.” -- Rumi
Last night I came up with the idea for a cup that looked like a volcano. Fall quarter when i wrote about glass as a material for my nonfiction class, I spent a lot of time studying volcanic glass. Luckily, bc I am officially at the hot shop 17 hours each week this quarter, I had the time to take an hour today to make two rumbling tumblers with Chris' help. This morning I designed a piece with the colors of the greek flowers, sea, and doorways. These are the memories that pop into my head at the most random moments, when I'm looking at Kathleen as she brings me a wrap, of a few feet I walked in a jungle, of the orange covering our futon in barcelona, of the yellow sailboats dotting the turquoise water in Lagos. So today I figured if I'm going to have these flashes, they've got to be put to use as inspiration.
I'm an incredibly lucky person because the two glass blowers I had my first glass crushes on are now my mentors. Clays Starbucks lamps made me first want to blow glass, and now i see him every day. The first piece of glass i bought was Cindy McQuade's, Kathleen's partner. I just love her colors and her shapes. And recently I've been going to her shop and today she gave me tools! her first pair of diamond shears, some small jim moore straight shears that'll be good for goblets, and a pair of Jim Moore tweezers. That's over two hundred dollars in tools. Then Kathleen let me use some bomb saffron to make a cuptop that turned out to be the size of a small brandy sniffer :) I even finally have been given a locker at the crafts center to store all my color.
Today has become my second birthday. This is the first day of my life....
