The Eastgate of the Abbey

Aug 21, 2010 19:39

I passed through the Eastgate area of town today, visiting a friend.  This is the bridge across the river that was originally part of the Abbey.

A further view of the bridge.

A close up view of the buttresses.  A lot of older Bury is built with flints, including parts of the converted barn in which I currently reside.

A few metres further on is the entrance to the Abbey Gardens. The gardens are spectacularly in bloom, and the new tower looks fabulous against a cloudy sky. The ornate ceiling has been installed in the tower - I saw some of it being carved last year so I look forward to posting photos when I get inside next.  I didn't linger as it was Saturday, Market Day, and the middle of the summer holidays so the place was packed. Also, I had a bus to catch.

A close up of one of the eye watering floral displays. Do not adjust your set, that is what they look like.
