Haha, I started working on this this morning when we had a little free time and weren't being social, but I didn't finish it and have had to make inch-by-inch progress on it over the course of the day.
Yuletide! I'm not exactly the rec type. I usually figure if somebody wants my opinion or advice on what to read, they'll ask for it. (Not to mention the fact that I have that stubborn habit of running the other way 80% of the time I see a bandwagon rounding the corner, heh.) But it's Yuletide, damn it, and so far I really have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of reading the stories I've managed to so far.
I'll start with the stories that were written for me, in the order they were listed in the official e-mail. I was lucky enough to get a story for each of my four requests.
Wearing Down Life is a Trigun story featuring my favorite gunslinging priest, Nicholas D. Wolfwood. It really has that anime episode feeling, I think, and puts our reluctant priest through his paces for the sake of... a cat.
Sara is an excellent Samurai Champloo piece told from Mugen's perspective. It looks back (angrily, of course, because that's what Mugen does best) on what happened with the blind assassin Sara.
Mirror Mirror is a Y: The Last Man fic written for me by someone who'd says s/he's never written Y stuff before and hopes it's okay, and let me tell you: if that's not a sweet Yuletide gesture I sure don't know what is. It tackles head-on the fallout immediately after issue #59 and focuses on the development of the Hero/Beth Deville relationship.
The Most Beautiful Woman of His Acquaintance is a tiny slice of Anne of Green Gables goodness. Short and breathtaking. As I said in my comments to the story, it's the very essence of Gilbert with Anne in that period of time.
And, in no particular order, stories I've loved out of the small portion I've gotten to read so far:
Comfort and Joy - A gorgeous missing moment from Little Women that keeps so well to the feel of the book. Beth and Laurie have a chat.
To Err, To Forgive - Another short for the Anne series and from Gilbert's point-of-view. It really can't be described as anything but lovely.
this mirrored perspective - Fables. The characterization of Bigby and Snow through the years is fantastic.
33° 35' N, 7° 39' W - Casablanca. Classy as hell, just like the movie, and it's got beautiful atmosphere. The thing I like best about this story is that Casablanca is as much of a character in it as Victor is.
Sanctuary - American Beauty. Set after the movie, this is almost a study of the relationship between Jane and Ricky. It takes movie characterization and draws on it, expands on it, and sacrifices nothing. I feel like if you're going to write serious true-to-canon fanfic that expands or moves beyond the actual canon, this is a great example of how characterization should be done.
Bird's Eye View - American Gods. Centered on Horus, this story is just a lush and absolutely beautiful work of art.
To what place - American Gods. An unexpected story about Laura. It's sparse, and that works very well for it. I'm kind of happy just knowing it exists.
This Harbour We Have Never Known - Dune. Its focus is Chani, and I kind of adore it. It's got that chilling kind of beauty I expect from Dune, and I love the imagery echoed throughout.
this is not a chick flick - Mythology retold, Hades and Persephone. One of the longer stories I've read and worth every damn minute I've had to steal to do so.
And... that's about all I've got so far.
Heading home tomorrow afternoon.
