Don't worry. We'll find them.

It's Friday, folks

Whether or not you've watched the BSG miniseries this past week, feel free to join in! Everyone who expressed interest is rewatching, so there will be spoilers for the rest of the series in both this post and the comments.

What was your introduction to BSG? Did you watch it as it originally aired? In this house we have a stubborn tendency to resist most popular TV shows, but somewhere along the line I heard some of the hype about the Last Supper promo picture and read an article about it, was intrigued, and never forgot it. Months later, when we got a Netflix account, we immediately started watching.

But let's talk about the miniseries itself. To paraphrase a quote from a very different story, these questions are more like guidelines. They're just to get discussion going; answer as many or as few as you like, or ask us your own.

  • Something I think the miniseries did excellently is establish the various relationships already in play on Galactica: the respect Chief and his crew showed Bill, the friendship between Bill and Tigh, Bill's obvious affection for Starbuck, Starbuck and Tigh's fight, the unresolved tension between Starbuck and Lee, the anger Lee felt toward Bill, Chief and Boomer arguing on their way to make out while Helo pretended he had no clue what was going on. What relationship-already-in-progress did you enjoy the most in the miniseries? Is there one you wish they'd have have focused on more?

  • Which character did you warm up to the fastest? For me, without question, it was Laura. I loved her pretty fiercely from the scene where she excuses herself from her seat on Colonial One and goes to the restroom to have a quiet and painfully human breakdown before composing herself again, and she was fantastically brave and stubborn for the rest of the miniseries without ever losing that fragile edge.

  • We were introduced to four Cylons in the miniseries. Did the reveal that proved Doral was really one take you by surprise? (Why does Doral look so much like Kevin Spacey?) Were you blindsided by Boomer? I was spoiled for Boomer by the time we watched it, but that didn't stop my stomach from sinking in dismay when she walked out at the end of the episode.

  • BSG is a four-season succession of tough choices. From Tigh giving the command to decompress the burning bulkhead, killing over eighty men, to Laura leaving behind ships incapable of making the jump, including the one carrying the innocent little girl she'd just spent time with, to Bill's decision to lie about Earth to everyone in an effort to give them hope, the miniseries is full of brutal decisions. What do you think was the toughest decision made in the miniseries? Do you think you would've chosen to handle it the same way it was dealt with in the show?

  • What was your favorite scene?

  • I read on the BSG wiki that originally Helo was supposed to be an expendable character and never addressed again after he was left on Caprica. Apparently Tahmoh Penikett's performance changed their mind. Were you curious to know what happened to Helo as the miniseries ended? I certainly realized I was curious when I saw him again in the next episode, but before that I assumed we wouldn't see him again. What a different show it'd be if they hadn't gone back to Helo on Caprica.

  • Returning to the beginning of the show, I'm always struck by how young and (relatively) unsulled everyone is. Who do you think has the canon journey that changes them the most?

Our next episode is 33, probably one of my all-time favorites. Please remember that you have over a week to watch it! Our next rewatch post will be September 6th, marking our transition to Mondays.
