Bleakest Place on Earth

This video is a bit pessimistic but it is just so darn cool.

I want to ride this ride.

...and make my own.

Even in bleakness, I'm like, "Well, armageddon means less cars so that's less TRAFFIC..." _skye_ May 3 2007, 18:17:10 UTC
Agreed on the lol factor - all that narrative in the background was so distracting and wonderful that I didn't even pay any attention to the song!! And I'm now at work so I can't even listen to it, dang.

I love the whole philosophical statement made by the use of the Mary Blair/Small World flat oversimplified style in contrast to the complicated question of human destiny. To poke fun at our acceptance of the inevitable decline of the civilization (terror by our own hands and Man's Inhumanity to Man play large in the whole beginning of this) through use of typical childhood indoctrination was very clever, I thought. And I'm sure they were poking a little fun at the anime craze via the robots - I was sure that plume of smoke from the building was going to herold a dark turn to the 'ride', but in true childhood-socialization form the Big Bad was replaced with the Big Imaginary Bad. I thought the jaded addition of the theory of the cyclical nature of civilization's demise there at the end was rather delicious and dark - loved it!

My favorite bit was at the very end, though, when the two little cave people, in the midst of the chaos and Reset that was going on where everything came together only to revert, turned to each other with A Look (I imagine). When I saw that I was reminded that regardless of humanity's destructive impulses or even malevolent forces beyond our control, if there are two people who love each other and can be together then the world, nay, everything will be all right.

...I know, what a message to take away from that! But after everything I am a hopeless, rather educated yet still naive romantic, God have mercy on my soul. *blush*

Oh, I agree about those two people at the end too!

Although I read it like "When someone loses everything, that seems bad; but when everyone loses everything, then it seems like we should be happy just to exist."

--which means what? Kinda weird... Not sure about that. :3

As bleak as the video is the song is very optimistic. Here are the lyrics:

Follow through
Make your dreams come true
Don't give up the fight
You will be alright
Cause there's no one like you in the universe

Don't be afraid
What your mind consumes
You should make a stand
Stand up for what you believe
And tonight
We can truly say
Together we're invincible

During the struggle
They will pull us down
But please, please
Let's use this chance
To turn things around
And tonight
We can truly say
Together we're invincible

Do it on your own
It makes no difference to me
What you leave behind
What you choose to be
And whatever they say
Your soul is unbreakable

If you look at the video from the point of view of the band, you'll see that the world around them is self-destructive but they are doing their own thing (playing their music)and not being affected by it. They are riding through life ignoring the chaos that would bring them down. And because of that, they are invincible.

PS I'm guessing you got this link from your bro. Right? (Indie emo FTW! :P) _skye_ May 5 2007, 00:31:38 UTC
Wow. I love the symbolism of that and think that video is really lovely now. I am so glad you posted the words, too, because once I listened to it I'm afraid I was rather put off by how whiny his voice sounded - I wouldn't have looked up the words for fear it was all WAAAAAH WAAAAAHHH OUR RELATIONSHIP IS DOOOOOOOMED AND RUIN IS INVINCIBLE! and I don't really need that, obviously! I'm glad to have been wrong.

I have a question, though. The singer is very supportive of his girl's individuality and goals and such - and we love him for this - and obviously he's committed to standing by her and feels that together they are even stronger - and we ADORE him for that! - but then there's this bit at the end:

Do it on your own
It makes no difference to me
What you leave behind
What you choose to be...

And I don't understand what seems to be a shift in his attitude into indifference. Her choices making no difference to him, what she decides to become and how that happens being unimportant to him, seems uncaring. And doing it on her own...? Isn't that different from what he's previously saying? Enlighten me, 'Idol. What gives? What do you see?

(Also, Idol, next time we talk I'd love to know what kind of song YOU would sing and the kind of ride YOU want to make! Or would you rather create a ride and Art Direct on someone else's song?)
