“How long do you think they’ll be gone for?”
Shannon jumped at the voice. She quickly turned around and found Walt looking at her.
“What?”
“How long do you think Mr. Locke and your brother will be gone for?”
“I don’t know, “ she said briskly before turning back around.
“Maybe they’re lost. They’ve been gone a long time,”
Shannon bit back an angry retort and continued staring out into the jungle. With every passing minute, she was becoming increasingly nervous. Boone and Locke had been gone for a long time. As much as she tried to deny it to herself, the others, and most of all Boone, she cared about him a lot and didn’t want him out in the jungle any longer. She knew that she couldn’t tell anyone this because they would tell her she was being selfish and that her concern should be Charlie and Claire being returned to the caves safely.
“He’s a really nice guy,” Walt said as he sat himself down next to Shannon.
She wasn’t used to anyone being this friendly with her. The only people who talked to her on a regular basis was Jack and Boone. Jack only ever asked about her breathing and how she was feeling so he really didn’t count as a friend. Sometimes Kate would check up on her and try to engage her in conversation but that didn’t happen too often.
“Yeah, he is,” she replied quietly, still staring out into the trees.
“Sometimes I wish I had a brother,”
“Yeah?”
“Yep. Then I could have someone to hang out with. No one really wants to hang out with me here. They all say they‘re too busy,”
She stayed quiet for a couple of minutes before looking over at Walt.
“You could hang out with me right now ... if you want,”
Walt gave her a baffled look and raised his eyebrows. Shannon wasn’t the most welcoming person on the island. She gave him a small smile to reassure him that she was serious and he grinned back. It was nice for someone to want him around.
“Did you know Hurley owes me $20, 000?”
“Really?”
As he started explaining about winning some game a bunch of times, Shannon felt a bit of the loneliness that was inside of her fading. It was nice that someone wanted to be around her for longer than five minutes.
They sat on the rocks for hours, talking about anything that popped into their heads, each finding solace in having someone to talk to. And as they sat waiting for their heroes to come in from the jungle, they learned that the best company can come from the most unlikely person.
