Title: Anti-Charachter
Rating: PG
Characters: Ana Lucia/Libby/Eko ( just friends, guys)
Spoilers: Season Two: Episodes Abandoned and the Other 48 Days (Does I hate them count? I hope so!)
Summary: “Oh you know, just talking about girl stuff…lovely things like pregnancy, and….Kotex….and” “I’m going to leave now.” “Good choice.”

For some reason, Ana Lucia felt perfectly safe, sitting there on the beach. She knew that somewhere in the jungle were the ever present “they”. She knew she would probably-if she didn’t act-be facing her last day here, because she had killed someone. But sitting here, looking out on the ocean, she felt safe. There were no noises-like whispers or animals, no screams-just the break and roll of the waves. The smell of salt and the ocean stung her, and she sat-silent, not thinking, just being there. Getting the chance to feel safe. Entertaining thoughts of freedom, love, God, and escape. Those things that she dreamed about, that she wanted terribly.
For now, this was freedom enough. But she still felt small stares, like pinpricks running up and down her back. Whispers, much like the Others( as they were called here) about her, apparently the girl she had killed was well loved, or at least standable. These people, from the things she gathered, had been luckier than her group. They had had a Goodwin, this time named Ethan, who had been shot after trying to hurt a girl. There had been three or four deaths, but no direct encounters with “them”. Lucky, very lucky, Ana Lucia had thought when she heard this. But these survivors had the same look her group had: worn down, tired, but not beaten.
Why did they all want to survive so badly? Wouldn’t it be easier to just give in to it, and collapse? Just lay there and wait…eventually, death would come, and maybe God for some, and not for others. Why did they struggle, day by day, only to remain the same? Was it worth anything? Would it be worth anything in the end? But survival was living, and they could-would escape someday. It would be worth it-everything is worth something in the end. If only one of them survived-maybe that little baby being held by his mother, maybe Eko or Libby, maybe the man who lost his love-it would be worth it. They would have won, against everything. Ana Lucia, sighed-even with these thoughts, she was still here, still here-no matter how hard she tried to imagine herself off of it.
Another couple passed by-a blonde man and girl-they had the baby with them. Behind them, Ana Lucia could see Libby walking up to her. She was carrying something welcome and beautiful-almost like a Shakespeare poem to her-food. A small plate of it. Just a tiny bit of meat-unidentifiable, and a couple other non-perishables. But still, food was food, and real food was a dream and a miracle. Libby smiled, the lines around her lips showed-wrinkles that weren’t there that first day. She handed Ana Lucia her plate, and the two sat, side by side, trying not to eat to fast and look like an idiot, while at the same time trying to enjoy each other’s company. The two finished quickly, but neither left. How was it that they both felt like strangers in a forgien country? Alienated?
“The doctor will be able to save him.”
“Who-the hick?” Libby nodded. “Yeah, he will. Why aren’t you helping him?”
She laughed, “Exactly like the guy with the leg on the first day. What you saw then is the extent of my medical involvement.”
“Useful here.” Ana Lucia said, with a smile-remembering the frequent broken bones.
“True.” An uncomfortable silence. “Ana, what do you think about these people?”
Something had been haunting Ana Lucia since she and Goodwin had had their talk that day. First they took the strong, and then they took the good. The good. Children, of course, were good-everyone knew that, and everyone could see it. “They’re better off now”. And they were-oh, god, why did he have to make sense! They were safe because the Others wouldn’t hurt some of their own, now the children were. And she wasn’t good-she was a murderer, a monster. Then what about Bernard? The man hugging his wife, not letting her go for a second-how was he bad? Then what about Eko? He waited fourty days for her, she hadn’t been waiting for him. Then what about Libby? What made her evil?
“I hate them! “ she screamed, loudly and jumping to her feet.
Libby looked stunned, “Alreadly?”
Ana sighed, “Oh God, not them. The Others-they’re the ones I hate. They took everyone! And we still haven’t managed to get one. And he made sense! He made insane, perfect sense!”
“Ana, please, calm down, everyone’s going to freak out. And who made perfect sense-Goodwin?”
His name stopped Ana Lucia in her tracks, and she collapsed to the ground.
“I knew you liked him, I’m sorry.”
Ana smiled, “All in the past. Now, we have all these nice people to get our things for us, to help us, and maybe no more Goodwins. Hopefully.”
Libby smiled. “And there hatch has supplies.”
“Oh really, like what?”
Libby smile stretched even further. “The necessities: a shower stall, with a razor and soap. A toilet, a lot of food, and-everyone’s favorite: tampons! Oh-I almost forgot-and a boat.”
Ana laughed out loud, “Of course there are, Libby. And a TV with HBO, fashion magazines, and a Hilton hotel room.”
Eko was surprised to catch them like that, laughing their heads off, having a girl chat. “May I interrupt?” He asked, sad to interrupt them, but glad-overjoyed-to see them, particularly Ana Lucia, like this. Completely against both their characters. “What were you talking about?”
“Oh, you know-girl stuff. Boats, pregnancy, and Kotex….and…”
“I’m going to leave now.”
“ ‘Bye” they replied, then went back to laughing like fools.
Completely against character, and completely unlike herself, she knew-but still, sitting there with Libby, thinking of Eko in the back of her mind, Ana Lucia felt happy. She still hated this island, hated the others, and hated herself. But-laughing over stupid things, thinking about nothing-like they were home. It was times like these that made her feel that there would be a happy ending, no matter what happened-love, friendship, all those other sappy, Lifetime words, would always beat out hate. Always.
