I.
Boone is five years old when his father takes him and his brother out on his yacht. Boone doesn’t like boats much.
“It’s okay, Boone,” Landon says. “Me and Dad will watch out for you.”
Landon is ten. He always looks after Boone. They don’t fight as much as Boone’s friend Tommy fights with his big brother. Landon teaches Boone to swim and fish and do lots of cool stuff. Boone knows he’s lucky. Dad’s busy at work lots of times and Mom is always with her friends. Landon teaches Boone how to do all the important stuff.
II.
Boone is six when Theresa falls down the stairs and breaks her neck. He knows it’s his fault and cries lots. Landon’s the only one who tells him it’s not. Mom’s too busy finding a new nanny and Dad’s too busy in his meetings to know Theresa’s gone.
III.
Boone is seven when the accident happens. Dad said Landon could go hunting with some of his friends. Boone wants to go too, but Landon says no. Boone doesn’t bother asking Mom and Dad. They’re too busy.
When the police come later on, Boone is the only one home. Bridget, the new nanny, already went home for the day. The policemen come in and wait for Mom to get home. Boone only hears parts of the conversation-hunting accident…Landon Carlyle…killed instantly-before the screams start to block out their voices. It takes him a few minutes to realize he’s the one screaming.
Mom’s crying when she gets up to use the phone. She calls Dad and tells him to come home.
IV.
Boone is ten when Mom brings home Adam and his daughter, Shannon. Shannon’s only eight. Boone doesn’t want to be her big brother. He wants her and her dad to go back to wherever they came from. For now, though, she sits on the edge of the pool with her legs dangling in the water as she plays with her Barbie doll.
“What happened to your mom?” he asks.
Shannon shrugs. “She died when I was four. Daddy said it was a car accident.”
“Do you ‘member her?”
“Sometimes,” she says. She glances over at Boone. “What happened to your daddy? Did he get in a car accident too?”
Boone nods. He’s not sure why he lies, but he’s pretty sure he shouldn’t tell Shannon the truth. Shouldn’t tell her about when Dad started drinking after Landon died or when Boone found him after the funeral with the blood around his head and the gun in his hand.
“Daddy said that after the wedding you’re gonna be my big brother.”
Boone nods and thinks about his own big brother. Mom never talks about Landon. She gets mad when Boone tries to. “Yep.”
She seems to notice that he’s gotten quieter and reaches for his hand. “You could pretend my daddy’s your daddy if you want.”
Boone shakes her hand off. “Adam’s not my dad.”
V.
Boone is eighteen when he moves to New York. Mom has the limo drive him to the airport. She’s got meetings though, so he’s learned not to bother asking her to come along. They say a brief goodbye the night before. Boone knows she blames him for his father’s death, and probably for Landon’s too. He knows that’s why she drinks more now, and why she avoids even looking at him.
Adam doesn’t come along either. Adam’s a nice enough man, but he’s not Boone’s father. His money and his presents still won’t bring back his father. Or Landon.
Shannon’s the only one who comes along. She doesn’t want him to leave; not when her father’s always in meetings and on trips and his mother is completely indifferent to her.
“You sure you have to go?” she asks.
Boone nods. “It’s just for school, Shan. I’ll be home for Thanksgiving in a few months.”
She nods and turns her head away, blinking back tears. Boone pushes the hair back from her face.
“And I’m just a phone call away. Okay?”
Shannon nods again and leans over to hug him. “Love you, Boone.”
“Love you too, Shan.”
VI.
Boone is twenty when Shannon calls him up crying. Adam was in a car accident and died. He assures her that he’ll be there and begins travel arrangements as soon as he hangs up.
After the funeral, when they’re drinking in his room, Boone studies her tearstained face. It’s the first time in years that he’s seen her look anything less than perfect. His heart aches for her, for the sadness he knows she’s feeling that he can’t take away. He holds her while she cries and wonders briefly why he’s got butterflies in his stomach.
VII.
Boone is twenty-two when he dies. As he lay on the hard rock of the jungle floor, Boone wishes Shannon was here. He knows he’s dying. Jack tries to tell him he’s going to fix him, but Boone knows he can’t. He feels it. Jack wants to amputate his leg, try to fix him that way.
“Wait,” he says. His voice is so quiet, so far away that he’s amazed Jack hears him. Jack turns to him and leans down. “Let me go, Jack…I’m letting you off the hook…”
A few seconds later, he mumbles Shannon’s name and tries to whisper a last ‘I love you’ to her. As he fades away, Boone sees a hand reaching for him. It’s Landon.
“Come on, little brother,” he says.
Boone lets go of one last breath and, as he reaches for Landon’s hand, smiles.
