About the home purchase thing....questions from a reporter anonymous February 21 2007, 22:36:26 UTC
Hello. I am a real estate reporter for Inman News and I'm working on an article this week about real estate statistics and the various sources of these statistics. I saw your post about buying a house and am interested in your perspective as a recent home buyer.

From user-generated content to industry-trade-group-generated surveys and reports, there is a wide range of data that is publicly available to real estate professionals and consumers alike.

Some questions:

1) Which of the following sources of real estate statistics, surveys, reports and analyses do you use regularly (mark a number next to all that apply to rank usefulness -- 1 is most useful , 2 is less useful, etc.):
( ) Real estate industry trade groups (ex. National Association of Realtors)
( ) Real estate blogs
( ) Independent real estate centers and forecasts (ex. Lusk, Anderson, Brookings, Texas A&M, etc.)
( ) Independent research firms (ex. Real Trends, DataQuick, etc.)
( ) Online real estate networks/communities (ex. MySpace, Active Rain, RealTalk, etc.)
( ) Online property-search and property information portals (ex. Zillow, Trulia, RealtyTrac, Foreclosures.com, Foreclosure.com, Apartments.com etc.)
( ) Media
( ) MLSs
( ) Real estate industry professionals (ex. an agent or broker who supplies market reports by mail or e-mail, etc.)
( ) A real estate brokerage company.
( ) Other (name it _____________)
( ) Other (name it _____________)

2) What single source of real estate data/statistics is most valuable to you, and why? What single source is least valuable and why?

3) What trends are you seeing or do you expect to see in the types of information that real estate professionals and consumers are relying on, and what do you think is driving these trends?

4) What data sources do you most recommend that home buyers and sellers monitor?

5) With so many real estate data sources, how can real estate professionals and consumers become educated and informed while avoiding data overload?

Thank you very much for any help.

Let me know if there is a good time to talk or I'm happy to work by e-mail. I'm working with a Friday deadline this week.

Best,

-Glenn
