i came about 10 seconds and 15 feet from a very good chance of having to abandon ship last night.
i wont go into tech. details because most of you would probbaly be lost.. but the general idea is that i went to go start the tow machine, to bring in some tow wire on the barge, and some how all the air in the system got dumped out, thus causing the throttles to loose power, so we were slowing down, towing a barge...that was just going 10kts, it was comming up on our stern very quickly...now im not a religious man, but 10 seconds later and who knows what would have happend...but the throttles got power back and we were able to speed up and get out far enough in front of the barge before it ran us over...talk about an adrenilene rush.
sometimes you forget how dangerous this job is, things go so smoothly and you grow complacent...thats where the real danger is..close call.
