So... I've taken to writing in class. This is going to do nothing for my grade. Tell me what you guys think. I'm definitely not too sure about this one. Just a bit of general Maya!fic. Since there's really not enough fanfic about her.

Warnings: Genfic, Maya!centric, pre-game past stuff.
Spoilers: Gets a bit into Maya's backstory, but most of it is conjecture.

It was raining. Maya stared wistfully out at it as the drops fell heavily against the porch. She was tired of being indoors. She was tired of staying inside and not being able to go out and have any fun. Of course... she might be able to get out if she could slip outside unnoticed. She paused then, listening for her Aunt Morgan. Not like it took Maya that long to figure out where her aunt was. There was crying coming from another part of the house. Which meant that her aunt was with the baby. Again. Not that Maya minded this too much. It meant that Aunt Morgan had something else to focus on, aside from making her behave herself, because she would one day become the master of Kurain.

Maya grinned a little, before looking out at the rain again. If Aunt Morgan was busy with the baby... well... there was nothing to keep her from going out to play in the rain. Which she did, laughing as the rain started to fall on her. Normally she wouldn't be so interested in going out on a day like this, but something had caught her eye earlier. Something out in the rain. Something which really was common enough to come across in Kurain, but Maya was one of the few that knew exactly how common it really was.

"Where are you?" Maya called, as she nearly danced through the sheets of rain. "I know you're here! I saw you while I was still inside!"

Maya wasn't very good at channeling if you wanted to be perfectly honest about it. From what people said, Mia was better at it and probably always would be. It's why sometimes, when Maya actually stopped to think about it, she wished that Mia had stayed in Kurain. Then Mia could become the Master. After all, it was pretty silly to become the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique when you weren't the best at channeling. Maya's talent laid elsewhere, and she knew it. And she smiled as something caught her eye. Maya turned, just in time to see a figure peer out from behind a tree.

"Hello!" Maya said, grinning now. "I'm Maya!"

The "person" stepped out, smiling. It was an older woman, and she approached Maya.

~You can see me.~

"Of course I can!" Maya proclaimed, still grinning. "Why are you out here in the rain?"

~I have nowhere else to go~ the woman said, sounding sad. ~I came to Kurain for a channeling, but I haven't been able to find anyone who can see me. So I haven't been able to get anyone to do it.~

"Aunt Morgan could do it!" Maya said brightly. Then her face fell a little as she thought about that. "Well... maybe. Her powers aren't that great."

~You can see me, little one. Could you do it? the woman asked.

Maya shook her head, frowning a little. "I can talk to ghosts and read auras, but I'm not that great at channeling either. They say I might be better at it when I'm older," she said, sounding a little apologetic.

~How old are you Maya?~

"Ten!"

The woman smiled, reaching down to ruffle the girl's hair. To an outside observer, it would look like the wind was doing it. Which would be strange, because there currently wasn't any wind. The rain was falling straight down.

~Can you take me to the shrine?~

Maya bit her lip at the question. She looked further up the mountain, before nodding slightly in answer. She knew where the shrine was, so that wasn't a problem. She just hoped that the trails up there were passable from all the rain. Sometimes it was hard to get to the shrine on days like this. Maya realized that she could just say no to the spirit, but she figured if she was already going to get in trouble for going outside in the rain (and she was), then she might as well do something to deserve it.

"All right, come on. We can light a candle for you, and another for your family," Maya said.

She had the feeling that this ghost had been a ghost for a while now. But maybe this would help put the spirit at ease, at least a little. The ghost, for her part, seemed satisfied, and reached down to ruffle Maya's hair again.

~Thank you, little one.~

"Maya!" an indignant cry cut through the ghost's thanks.

"Oh shoot," Maya murmured, biting her lip. She was just about to hide behind the tree that the ghost had been hiding behind, before her aunt came into view.

"Maya! What are you doing out here? You're getting wet! No, you're already absolutely soaked! Young lady, you are filthy! And you could get sick!" Morgan growled, closing the distance between them. "You come get under this umbrella right now!"

Maya looked down, noticing there was mud on her robes, but ignoring it. It wasn't like it was all over her or anything. And it figured that Aunt Morgan would be annoyed about something silly like mud when there were more important things going on.

"I can't! I promised the lady that I'd take her up to the shrine and light a candle!" Maya protested, before backing up a step.

"Ugh! That again! There's no one out here except for you and me!" Morgan cried, rolling her eyes.

Maya scowled. It was not her fault that Morgan never believed her in instances like this.

"Yes there is!" Maya yelled, gesturing at the ghost. Who, it should be noted, did not look amused at the way Morgan was treating Maya.

"Really, Mystic Maya, you should carry yourself better," Morgan said, finally regaining her composure, before gearing up for a lecture. "You are going to be the Master one day. You need to remember that. These stories you're making up about being able to see ghosts--"

"I'm not making anything up!" Maya cried, cutting Morgan off. "Just because you can't see them doesn't mean that they aren't there!"

Morgan looked like she'd been slapped in the face at her niece's pronouncement. Maya, perhaps sensing that it might be wise to take advantage of this situation, turned and bolted down the path towards the shrine. The ghost was on her heels, she could sense it without having to turn and look. Oh, she'd be in so much trouble when she got home, but it would be worth it. Now she just had to hope she didn't get stuck up at the shrine.

She shouldn't though. The bear didn't like to come out on days like today.
