Yuletide 2013 Recs II/Snowflake Challenge Day 3

Feb 04, 2014 13:33

I'd been hoping to get back and read some more Yuletide fic and make another recs post, and Day Three of
snowflake_challenge is to rec at least three fanworks, so I'm killing two birds with one stone here, with another selection of recs from this year's Yuletide, (though actually I gave up around the end of M. One day I will have ability to read enough online, but this year is not that point so I didn't read many long fics in the same fandoms, so omissions are frequently to do with that rather than lack of quality):

Cadfael Chronicles - Ellis Peters
The Unknown Postulant (4798 words) by dizzy_fire
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Cadfael Chronicles - Ellis Peters
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Brother Cadfael, Sister Magdalen (Cadfael)
Additional Tags: Mystery, Case Fic
Summary: A young postulant at Godric's Ford is found unconscious in the fields. It seems that she has sneaked out from the convent to escape an unwanted vocation. But Sister Magdalen has some doubts, and asks Brother Cadfael to help her get to the bottom of the mystery.

Sister Magdalen-centric story, which is also a pitch-perfect Cadfael mystery in miniature, really lovely work, with so many lines that quietly ring true to the series.

The Chronicles of Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones
Plus Ca Change (2488 words) by whetherwoman
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Christopher Chant, Conrad Tesdinic, Eric Chant, Benjamin Allworthy, Original Characters
Summary: Three eras - three Chrestomancis.

As it says, it's a glimpse of past, present and future Chrestomancis. It rings really true in tone and it's a lovely read.

Which is Rather Full of Ambassadors, Invisibility, and Roast Beef Sandwiches (1274 words) by mairelon
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones, JONES Diana Wynne - Works
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Millie | Millie Chant, Janet Chant, Cat Chant, Julia Chant, Roger Chant, Chrestomanci - Character
Summary: Chrestomanci Castle hosts its annual Halloween ball, but the guests are running around engaging in intrigue.

This one's great fun and very well-characterised. (Cat in particular is so very Cat.) And it rather neatly bridges Charmed Life and The Magicians of Caprona.

Discworld - Terry Pratchett
The Unseeing Eye of Death (1983 words) by brutti_ma_buoni
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Lobsang Ludd/Susan Sto Helit
Characters: Lobsang Ludd, Susan Sto Helit, Death (Discworld), Angua von Uberwald
Summary: There's a wedding in the air in the Discworld. But there are certain *technical issues* among the soon-to-be in-laws. One awkward evening in a bar amid the preparations.

Loved this and the very Pratchett-ian logic of what the technical issues are, in this case.

Certainties (3127 words) by Nomad
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Havelock Vetinari, Death (Discworld), Rufus Drumknott
Summary: Only two things in life are certain: death and taxes. The anthropomorphic personification of one meets the man behind the other.

Death and Vetinari, and it's note perfect. (I'm not surprised; I remember this author's amazing Granny Weatherwax fic from last year.)

Eternal Law
the fuse will have to run out sometime (3080 words) by Sandrine Shaw
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Eternal Law
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Zak Gist/Richard Pembroke
Characters: Zak Gist, Richard Pembroke
Summary: There's not one of the seven deadly sins he isn't personally familiar with, and Richard is responsible for triggering at least half, if not all of them.

Zak and Richard, counting down to the end of the world, post-series. Very well done.

The Importance of Being Earnest - Wilde
except in my affections (3576 words) by Fahye
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Importance of Being Earnest - Wilde
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Gwendolen Fairfax, Cecily Cardew, Algernon "Algy" Moncrieff, John "Jack" Worthing
Summary: "It would be very irresponsible of our husbands and wives to let us go wandering, in what must be an enchanted forest, without their close supervision. It's nearly certain that we are married to each other."

This one is just joyous - so many wonderful, Wildean lines in a perfectly nonsensical trope fic.

Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Murder at the Fête (3010 words) by Vyola
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jane Marple
Summary: When murder strikes unseen, only Miss Marple can sort through means, motive, and opportunity to reveal the killer.

It reads exactly like a missing Miss Marple short story: tone, a neat little mystery, and pitch perfect Miss Marple herself.

Tempus Fugit (4683 words) by butterflymind
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jane Marple, Raymond West
Additional Tags: Mystery
Summary: Despite everything, Miss Marple was thoroughly enjoying her day out.

And a second, equally wonderful, proper short Miss Marple mystery! The murder is especially neat, with a very nice solution.

Pushing Daisies
Emerson Cod's Entirely Acceptable Christmas (2320 words) by HalfshellVenus
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Pushing Daisies
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Emerson Cod, Ned (Pushing Daisies), Charlotte Charles, Olive Snook
Summary: The knitting detective is a rib-stitch man in a cable-knit world, and yet the trials of friendship are less of a burden than he believes.

As a show with a narrator and a very artificial style, Pushing Daisies is hard to write, but this fic pulls it off brilliantly. Emerson does Christmas in his own particular way. What more could anyone ask for, except Jim Dale to read it aloud?

The Quiet Gentleman - Georgette Heyer
The Quiet Countess (2607 words) by Temaris
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Quiet Gentleman - Georgette Heyer, HEYER Georgette - Works
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Gervase Frant/Drusilla Morville
Characters: Drusilla Morville, Gervase Frant, Mrs Morville, Lady Morville, Abney, The Dowager Countess of St Erth
Additional Tags: Childbirth, Implied childbirth
Summary: Drusilla Frant, nee Morville, is not having the best of days.

Drusilla is having a case of too much (mostly) well-meant advice. Entertaining and affectionate coda to the book.

The Sarah Jane Adventures
The Recorder in the Room (1654 words) by dbskyler
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sarah Jane Adventures
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rani Chandra/Clyde Langer
Characters: Rani Chandra, Clyde Langer, Haresh Chandra, Gita Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith
Summary: He stood there, Rani's small digital recorder in his hand.

This is excellent, but it would be spoilery to explain quite why, so you'll just have to trust me and go and read it, if you haven't already.

Venetia - Georgette Heyer
World Enough and Time (2322 words) by twistedchick
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Venetia - Georgette Heyer
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jasper Damerel/Venetia Lanyon
Characters: Jasper Damerel, Venetia Lanyon
Additional Tags: Romance, unexpected animals, interruptions, proposal, Relatives, Propriety, Scandal, perfect butler, dining-room table
Summary: After all has been said and done, can Damerel finally manage to propose?

A direct continuation from the end of Venetia with a lot of charm, humour and warmth.
