Yuletide recs post

Jan 01, 2014 13:46

Hastily, before reveals this afternoon! There are heaps of things I haven't even looked at, stuff I probably didn't bookmark, some of these I might not yet have commented on, but let's have a look before we all cease to be anonymous.

(And, of course, not forgetting my wonderful gifts, all recced here - Chalet School, Miss Marple & Ten Stupidest Things I've Heard Since Richard III's Remains Were Uncovered.)

Cold Comfort Farm
The Untidy Lot (2838 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Cold Comfort Farm - All Media Types, The World's End (2013)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Flora Poste, charles fairborn, Seth Starkadder, Amos Starkadder
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Robots, Hollywood
Summary:
American moviegoers are swooning for Seth Starkadder. But there's something unnerving about life on the Hollywood backlots. They're only after one thing: your blood. Your breath. Your life. Which is why Seth is ever so glad when Flora Poste drops in for a studio tour.

I don't have a clue about the other crossover involved, but the Cold Comfort side is absolutely brilliant. It's glorious, completely glorious, one of my absolute favourite things this Yuletide. You can probably read it even if you don't know Cold Comfort, because it's so entertaining. It's better if you do, of course, but still.

You know that if she HAS made a mockery of your request, or failed to post a completed fic, you can report her to the mods, right?

*big hugs*

A concerned nonnie and fellow REAL Ghost Soup fangirl

Ghost Soup, if you haven't already gathered, is a made-up example fandom for Yuletide that's now a sort of real fandom that's used to parody fandom, because that's the kind of thing that happens in fandom. This is just brilliant - sort of Mary Sue, Fangirl, Bridget Jones style, and the level of detail the author's put in - whole anon threads and journals - is amazing. And it's very, very funny...

The Good Life | Good Neighbors

Please forgive any snow-based inaccuracies/impossibilities - it's Christmas!

Oh, this one is as if someone kindly made an extra Christmas special for us all. Perfect. ♥

Summary:
Cracky coffee shop AU with magic!

As it says, it's a Jonathan Strange coffee-shop AU. It's delightful and clever and funny. (I don't know what the best bit is - probably Mr Norrell, who comes early to not drink coffee, or Jonathan's not-very-anonymous blog posts, or what, but it's one of those things that should never work and does. Marvellous.) (There are other fics for this I haven't even looked at, but I'm willing to bet, this being Yuletide, that they're good.)

Love, Actually (2003) (crossover with It's A Wonderful Life, Good Omens, and Mary Poppins).
Holiday Help (6594 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Love Actually (2003), Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett, It's a Wonderful Life (1946), Mary Poppins (1964)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Relationships: David/Natalie (Love Actually), Harry/Karen, Mia/Harry, Sam/Joanna (Love Actually)
Characters: Rufus (Love Actually), Mia (Love Actually), David (Love Actually), Natalie (Love Actually), Alex (Love Actually), The President (Love Actually), Harry (Love Actually), Sarah (Love Actually), Daniel (Love Actually), Sam (Love Actually), Aziraphale, Crowley (Good Omens), Hastur (Good Omens), Ligur, Clarence Oddbody, Mary Poppins
Additional Tags: Crack Crossover
Summary:
It's the holiday season, and this year Heaven and Hell have decided to adopt the Earthly tradition of temporarily doubling down on staff. Follow the adventures of the angel Rufus as he tries to do good alongside his new colleagues, Aziraphale, Clarence Oddbody, and Mary Poppins, opposite their rivals Mia, Crowley, Hastur, and Ligur. Between them stand a frustratingly passive new Prime Minister, his inconveniently alluring tea lady, a US President for whom Hell bears precious little responsibility yet claims as a success, and a handful of other people being messed around.

If you know the film well (like, er, me *looks around shiftily*), you'll know that Rowan Atkinson's character is, in fact, supposed to be an angel. This crossover takes that aspect and runs away with it, which is great.

Someday, John is going to learn how to say no to his wife.

Today is not that day.

Margaret and John's life is never going to be quiet, and it still involves a lot of other people - I love this glimpse into their married life, complete with more Higgins and Mrs Thornton, and the changes Margaret will make.

(Actually, this is another fandom where everything was good - there's another fic and Madness fic, too, I think, so do stop to look.)

No one who saw Catherine Moreland as a little girl could have supposed she was to be a heroine.

Fortunately, she'd discovered the wonder that was teen romances. Fortunately, she'd read Twilight.

Another updated Jane Austen - this time Northanger Abbey with Catherine and Isabella as fans of Twilight rather than Mrs Radcliffe, which fits...

Pitch perfect Red Dwarf! (If you don't know Red Dwarf, there's no explaining; if you do, I need say no more, need I?)

Characters: Assorted OCs, Plantagenet Ancestors, Unconvincing Osteologist, The Daily Mail

Summary:
The discovery of Richard III's remains in Leicester brings a number of visitors to the city, most of them dead. Tourism may suffer. A handful of vignettes from this critical turning point in English history.

This one is funny, poignant, clever and sets up a whole AU world from the Blog post that could quite easily become a brilliant novel.

Tudor Spies and Perfidy (744 words) by Anonymous

While You Were Sleeping (1995)
How Life Does Turn Out (2594 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Callaghan/Lucy Moderatz
Characters: Lucy Moderatz, Jack Callaghan, Midge Callaghan, Ox Callaghan, Mary Callaghan, Peter Callaghan
Summary:
Life doesn't always turn out the way you plan.... Sometimes, it's better.

I liked all the fics for this (I think there were two or three), and while this one just about wins, if you like the film, you should check out the rest. Anyway, this is perfectly in tone and a satisfying additional look at the ending. (And, shh, this is one of my handful of romantic comedies I really, really like. Unlike an awful lot of them, it actually manages to be romantic and a comedy. And it has the leaning thing. So. ;-p)
