Fic Corner: My Fic & Recs

Oct 03, 2013 20:28

Here's the fic I wrote for
fic_corner. I was waiting to post it because I started finally typing up the original treat I was going to write for someone, but it is still not quite working out. That's about two months of it not quite working out now, so I shall just have to bury it until one day it resurrects itself as something (as stories often do) - and get on and post my fics and some recs for very shiny fics from the collection:

I defaulted early on, but I wrote two treats, one in the short treat collection, one in the main:

Secret Supper (564 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Adventure Series - Enid Blyton
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dinah Mannering & Philip Mannering
Characters: Dinah Mannering, Philip Mannering
Additional Tags: Siblings, Pre-Series
Summary:
Philip's in trouble again...

Postcards From the River Sea (2329 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Journey to the River Sea - Eva Ibbotson
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Maia Fielding, Clovis King, Arabella Minton, Finn Taverner, Neville Glastonberry
Additional Tags: Post-Book(s), Epistolary
Summary:
A collection of letters to and from England and Brazil, 1912-13.

And now, recs! I have to say, from what I have seen, it looks as though there is a very high percentage of exceptional fic, so I'd recommend poking around to see what childhood favourites you might find in the 100+ fandoms. However, here is a selection from those I know and read (mostly in the first half of the alphabet, because I'm incurably alphabetical and don't have that much reading stamina).

(The short version of this is pretty much: I read most of the DWJ and they were all awesome.)

Later and Far Away (1829 words) by athersgeo
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chalet School - Elinor M. Brent-Dyer
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Margia Stevens
Summary:
Margia's in Paris. It's a world away from Austria...

It's lovely to get fic featuring a more minor character, and this is a nice, thoughtful piece looking at Margia, away in Paris during the events of "Exile".

The Village Witch's Ginger Hero (5483 words) by Minutia_R
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Marianne Pinhoe, Irene Pinhoe Yeldham, Original Characters, Janet Chant, Julia Chant, Joe Pinhoe
Additional Tags: Queer Themes, Unplanned Pregnancy, The Folk
Summary:
In which Julia and Janet discover romance novels--and Marianne discovers some consequences of freeing the Folk, the dangers of writing real person fic when you're an enchantress, and some things about herself that she hadn't known.

Pretty much damn perfect, really. Also, you saw the bit where it says "Janet and Julia discover romance novels", right? What are you waiting for?

Measure Every Grief (4122 words) by the_rck
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones, Homeward Bounders - Diana Wynne Jones
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Christopher Chant, Millie | Millie Chant, Jamie Hamilton
Additional Tags: Crossover
Summary:
When Millie finds a half drowned boy in the garden, Christopher faces a mystery.

When someone made a request for Homeward Bounders/Chrestomanci fic, I really hoped someone would do it, and they have, and it's great. The two interact, but without taking away from the hardness of the HB ending. Jamie's weariness rings very true, but at least Christopher can help in one small thing.

knowledge in pursuit (1786 words) by dropsofviolet
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Millie | Millie Chant
Additional Tags: Missing Scene, Coming of Age, Canon Related, Animal Death
Summary:
Millie leaves Series Ten, and her childhood, behind.

Lovely little (if sad) missing scene for Lives of Christopher Chant, with Millie.

The Wine Bowl (1218 words) by Minutia_R
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chronicles of Prydain - Lloyd Alexander
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Taran of Caer Dallben, Eilonwy (Chronicles of Prydain), Gwenlliant
Summary:
“Once they saw that Hen Wen was a white pig and not a golden sheep--and not even oracular any more--they put down their weapons and apologized quite nicely.” Eilonwy frowned. “Or at least that’s what they were doing as far as anyone could understand them. They might have been reciting a poem about anemones and primroses. Some people just can’t admit when they’re lost.”

EILONWY, basically. I don't think I've ever said here how I read and re-read this when I was about ten or eleven, probably about a hundred times. And this is both very much in-keeping with the series, very funny and touching at the same time.

Flower and Thorn (2338 words) by Morbane
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Fire and Hemlock - Diana Wynne Jones
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Thomas Lynn, Polly Whittacker
Additional Tags: Dysfunctional Relationships, Curses
Summary:
They say the righteous path is beset by briars.

Polly and Tom make things work by making them not work, in exactly the way they do at the end - keeping that paradox going forever, no matter how hurtful that is, if it's the only way to be together. It's a painful, excellent fic. (Oh, F&H...)

The Curse of the Blue-Eyed Tiger (2707 words) by vanillafluffy
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Midnight Is a Place - Joan Aiken
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Anna-Marie Murgatroyd, Lucas Bell, Julian Oakapple
Additional Tags: Found Family
Summary:
Anna-Marie's new friend stirs up unhappy memories for Lucas.

Just noting that my lovely gift fic is still amazing. You should go read it. *nods*

So, that was half an alphabet of recs for you.
