Recs Post: Chalet School

Jul 16, 2011 09:20

I've had this recs post ready on my LJ since early April. Thought it might be worth actually posting at last! And, wait, don't run away... this post includes scenic vids of Austria; also Doctor Who and Jeeves & Wooster crossovers and an excellent & totally strings-free historical fic set in Nazi Germany.

The School at the Chalet )

fannish scribbles, fanvids, historical, chalet school, recs, crossover

Ooooh, I shall have to read them! Probably not till I get July (and the writing I am supposed to be doing) done, but have definitely noted the page...

:-) Actually, it's quite surprising how much CS stuff there is out there, and quite a lot of it is good. (ALthough, compared with my other fandoms, there is far less blowing up of stuff and so on.)

Btw, the very last is just a drabble - I suspect (even if you don't know Buffy at all), recalling a conversation we had a while back, that you may find it as amusing as I do. :-)

Oh wow! Thanks for all the links. I haven't read a lot of CS fanfiction, though I own a number of the 'fill in' titles from Girls Gone By Publishers. I can't wait to start on some of these, especially the Thekla one. :oD

Btw, did you know Girls Gone By is republishing all the CS books? They're complete and unabridged, as opposed to the cut down Armada ones.

Cool! I hadn't, either, till this year, but I've been ill & did a big reread and then moved onto the fanfiction - for a long while that was just about my level! :-)

I haven't read any of GGB sequels/prequels, but I am intrigued by them. I had known they were repinting them. I am curious about the unabridged versions - a friend gave me an old 2nd hand hardback for a birthday a couple years back & on the reread, it was interesting - there were whole new scenes and things. On the other hand, I can't rebuy all sixty. Aargh.

I should put a link to them on this, really.

They're not all available at the same time. They're reprinting them at a rate of about two a year, which is far more affordable (thankfully, as I'm no millionaire). Unfortunately, they also sell out as it's a limited print run. GGBP have reprinted a few of the earlier reprints, but I grab the books when they become available so I don't miss out. I pay around £14 per book, including postage. But! They're also reprinting all of EBD's other books, most of which have been out of prints for years.

It's surprising what was cut out of the Armada versions. The original School at the Chalet is about twice the size of the Armada one. There's a later book where the entire subplot of Gillian Lenton meeting her future husband is missing. I don't know why they had to cut them so much.

Oh, I see. I hadn't realised about the limited run, but of course, that makes sense. I'll have to keep an eye on them - I'm only missing two holiday books from the paperback run now.

Ha! I'm so glad you mentioned that. I was really intrigued by the cuts, having read the one hbk and it made me wonder if all those times where the characters talk about something as we're supposed to know about it, it was cut out. And Gillian Linton and her husband was one of those - so there was more stuff. I think all the later ones, towards the late 80s and 90s were unabridged, but some of the earlier ones really do seem to have been cut down.

Thanks for the rec! I'm working my way through the other recs and I'm really enjoying them.

Well, you know I like that story! :-) Glad you're enjoying the rest. I was surprised by how much there was, actually. There are more obvious fandoms with less stories about.
