Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season): The West Wing

My answer to this shows how hypocritical me recommending shows is, because I simply haven't watched anything new new for a long time, only returning series I already like. Bad me. However, in the meantime I have been watching some new old things on DVD, and in the spirit of this question, I choose the most recent.

(Disclaimer: I was keeping quiet about this in case anyone in the US had political objections, or anyone wanted to spoil it by telling me it got rubbish after Season X or Y. I have some knowledge of US politics, but only historical. I just like it as a TV show.) It is very well written, exceptionally so, in places, and the characterisation is second to none. Martin Sheen is awesome (the entrance is pretty great in ep1 "I am the LORD your God!"), and Donna Moss is one of my new favourite characters in anything, which means I have to watch the rest of it now. (I've just seen the opener for S4 and why she didn't kill Toby and Josh for talking ideology and politics non-stop while they were stranded, I don't know. The President was quite right that she was the only reason the three of them found their way back to Washington.)

I'm only up to the first eps of S4, so spoiler me and I may have to do something nasty.

(But when, when are they going to run around a bit and try to defuse a bomb/save the world/solve the crime? Oh, wait, have I been watching too much Spooks and stuff? Don't people on TV always solve crimes, save the universe and fight the bad guys?)

Having said that, I think there ought to be quotes:

CJ : "We need to be investigated by someone who wants to kill us just to watch us die. We need someone perceived by the American people to be irresponsible, untrustworthy, partisan, ambitious, and thirsty for the limelight. Am I crazy, or is this not a job for the U.S. House of Representatives?"

Ainsley : "You need a haircut."
Sam : "Shouldn't you be trying to keep me out of jail or something?"

Josh : "He can have a member try to attach an amendment to the override vote."
Donna : "What kind of amendment?"
Josh : "Doesn't matter. To qualify for the estate tax repeal the estates have to have Astroturf."
Donna : "And still it's hard to figure why Congress can't get anything done."

Sam : "If you're in the middle of something, I can come back."
Adamley : "We're eliminating genocide. What are you doing?"
Sam : "Eliminating the penny. So, I'll come back."

Leo : "We've got to meet with Albie."
Bartlet : "He's going to scold me. He's been at the State Department since Truman. He thinks I'm a kid and that he outranks me."
Leo : "You'll be fine."
Bartlet : "I've got to tell him I lost a submarine. Can I make something up like say 'what if a friend of mine hypothetically...'"

Bartlet : "I can't ask Rene right now."
Leo : "Why not?"
Bartlet : "Well frankly I thought he did something stupid and inconsiderate last week but it turns out I was just in a bad mood."

Sam : "I need you to tell me everything you can tell me about the superconducting supercollider."
Professor Milgate : "How much time do we have?"
Sam : "About ten minutes."
Professor Milgate : "If you pay very close attention, stay very, very quiet - I can teach you how to spell it."

Josh : "Why do you suppose this one's so hard to spin?"
CJ : "Because it's the classic Washington scandal, we screwed up by telling the truth."
Josh : "All right. Let's try not to do that that much."

Leo : "I know it was a screw-up, but I loved how he stormed into it, full throttle, like there's now a Sam Seaborn sized hole in the wall."

North Dakotan : "'North' makes us sound cold, flat, and snowy."
Donna : "Well, you are cold and flat and snowy."

Leo McGarry: "We spent millions of dollars developing a pen that could write in space. Do you know what the Russians did?"
Josh Lyman: "Used a pencil?"
Leo McGarry: "Used a pencil."

I belong to the school of thought that says why use one random quote when you can use about ten? Especially when I couldn't find the one I actually wanted...
