Shinji barely has time to react before the foreign fist sails across his mouth, drawing blood and leaving a nasty mark he won't soon forget. Shinji himself is sent flying, skidding across the dirt and pavement, coughing and sputtering.

"W-what the hell?" Shinji manages through a swollen cheek. He stumbles back to his feet, his eyes now ablaze, like a beast provoked. "Why the fuck did you go and do that for? What the fuck did I ever do to you? Are you fucking CRAZY?!"

Toji looks at Shinji simply, he is obviously holding back a lot of anger. "Because my sis was hurt when you fought that angel!" His eye's challenge Shinji as he says this.

Shinji's eyes widen in response, "Someone... someone was hurt? Because of me?"

Guilt washes over him, but only for a moment - Shinji's still pretty pissed about getting his face dented in. He marches up to Toji, ignoring his fear of further injury, and refutes his accusation from mere inches away.

"Look, I'm sorry that happened, but what else was I supposed to do? Let that Angel wreak havoc and mayhem on the rest of the damn place? Seriously, are you retarded or what? Try using your brain once in awhile. Somebody's got to do the fighting, otherwise there's no point to the Eva's existence at all!"

"I don't know! All I know is that my little sister is in the hospital as a result of your fight!" Toji yells at Shinji. Despite the anger there is frustration there too.

"What am I supposed to do about that? Huh?" He yells back.

"And the only other option is to let that god damned freak of nature have its way with every other human being on the planet, is that what you want?" Shinji repeats himself, nearly red in the face now. "I can understand why you're mad, but is hitting me going to make her any better? Do you walk up to strangers on the street and punch just because they look at you funny? Use some common sense already! I didn't have a choice!"

"Yeah, well neither did my sister. Maybe it was pointless to punch you? At least its something!" He stares at Shinji a moment seething before yelling, "Its not like I can do anything to the angel!"

"You can stop ragging on the people saving your ass from them, that's for sure!" Shinji counters fiercely, not backing down. "And you're damn right it was pointless to punch me! If you want to do something, then do it, but picking stupid fights in the process isn't going to solve anything."

Shinji huffs, finally calming himself down a bit. "You don't know what it's like, fighting in that thing. It's not exactly a job one eagerly volunteers to do. Your mind, your heart... everything inside of you is racing when you pilot an Eva. It's difficult to focus, let alone take on an Angel without shitting your pants. Do you see where I'm coming from here?"

Toji sighs, his anger is still evident. "Yeah, what would I know about fighting monsters right? I'm just some dumb jock who is mad about his sister."

He takes a deep breath. "You know what? This isn't even worth it." He starts to walk off after he says this.

Shinji feels his rage subside, not sure how to feel about the encounter. He initially intends to let Toji go - he doesn't need anymore bruises, after all - but gives in to his better half, catching up with Toji.

"If you want to fight," he begins with understandable hesitation, "you can, you know. You shouldn't feel helpless. I'm sure there's something you can do."

Is this person...

Shinji actually smiles, "I'm sure... you're worth something, too."

...exactly how I used to be?

Not wanting to press his luck any further, Shinji scurries off to get his face attended to. It was worth a shot to reach out to Toji, he surmised, even if he didn't listen. Maybe all he needed was a little bit of hope.

Toji is momentarily surprised by this. What is this guy thinking? He asks himself as he walks away.
