Who: Fiorella, D'kai
What: What: D'kai spots Ella in the gardens at the weyr. They talk a bit and he breaks up with her! (Or just tries to tell her she's still only 12, but either way she doesn't take it so well.)
Where: Herb Garden, Fort Weyr
When: Day 18, month 10, turn 20 of Interval 10.
Summer is waning, and the weather is cool enough for a light jacket although the skies are clear of clouds. The dusk is progressing slowly, with sunlight enough still for the shape of one bronzerider sloping along through the herbs, bending here to sniff or prodding there to set leaves springing. He is wandering aimlessly enough; perhaps he's just here to smell the roses, so to speak.
Fiorella isn't exactly an official resident of the weyr anymore, but she does still making it there on occasion. Today she happens to be back within the weyr however, wandering the gardens she's looking through the plants to see what's all there.
That's okay, D'kai won't mind, especially not if it means that he gets to see... "Ella!" He catches sight of her shape somewhere ahead, and picks up the pace so he's drawing up beside the young healer apprentice, aiming a hand at the top of her head. "Hey! Glad to see you around! What're you doing at the Weyr?"
Fiorella turns at the sound of her name, though the smile that greets the bronzerider isn't all that bright. "I've been helping with deliveries to the weyr," she explains, ducking out from beneath that hand. "Just checking what's out here, Journeyman Liere is going to double check when he's done checking in the the weyr healers."
Deke's hand falters in mid-air, catching at nothing, and falls to his side as the man slows his strides, matching his for hers. "Ohh. What kind of deliveries?" He grins down at the girl, hopefully. "What, no hug? For your favourite bronzerider?" Not as though it's been a custom between the two of them, but. And he asks, brightly, "Have you tried on the mitts yet? And the scarf? Does it match any of your stuff?"
"Some salves and oils and things. Restocking some things that are made at the hall before winter." Fiorelle explain. A shrug follows, "Who says you're my favorite? Hmm?" she questions, turning a glance towards him as she takes a few steps down the path. "I did, they're perfect and I have a few things they'll match. You did tell your mother thank you for me. Right?"
"The weyr is deeply indebted to you, I'm sure," D'kai laughs, with one long finger indicating her: Ella. And then his eyes widen, the rider misses a step and falls behind her, his expression bemused, and he pauses by a yellowing bush to inspect it closely, twitch its leaves. "Oh. Well, no one, I'm sure. -- I did. She said if you ever wanted anything else, she'd be happy to make you it!" This is added with a smile for the girl regardless.
Fiorella might not be as happy to see him as he might have thought, but at least she's talking to him... "To the hall maybe," she replies to that first comment, sending a glance his way. A shrug follows the last, "Nothing else right now, thank you. He might have stopped, but she's still slowly following the path, eyes on one side watching the plants.
There's a long moment of silence where Deke just kind of ... stands there, his brow crinkling up in the middle, his fingers dangling at the edge of that plant. "Hey, uh, Ella?" He drifts after her eventually, inquiring curiously and softly, "Did I ... do something, say something wrong? Don't you like the gloves? I can get my ma to make you something else, if that's it."
He had to go and ask that didn't he. "What?" Fiorella asks in that pause between name and question. "Of course I do, they're great." Beat. "I heard Mikhuth caught Elaruth," she comments, though what that might have to do with anything...
He's only concerned, of course, and her silence is broken only by the faint lift of his brows, his thumb hooking into his belt. D'kai is reassured only slightly, as indicated by the questioning quirk of his mouth. "Yes," he draws out the one word, tipping it up at the end. "He did. And soon there will be eggs, and candidates, and..." It hangs there, in the air: and?
"And Hattie..." Ella finishes turning send a glance towards the bronzerider, raising a brow, though her own comment is left to hang in the air. Turning back to the plants she ducks down to check the tag stuck in the ground at its base.
D'kai continues to be baffled, and echoes with a little frown tugging at his mouth, "And Hattie? What about Hattie? -- did she say something to you? Is she upset?" Deke Just Doesn't Get It. He joins Ella next to the plant, bending down to pretend at scrutinizing the wilting little flowers. "What did I do, Ella? You can tell me."
Fiorella shakes her head, "No, just that Mikhuth caught Elaruth." That's all Hattie really had to say on that. There's a long pause before she says anything more. "You gave me a present and we had a date and.." she draws in a breath effectively cutting herself off as she stands to walk off.
Realization is slow to dawn, and D'kai is still gazing after Fiorella when she abruptly straightens and moves to leave. "Hey! -- wait. What? And? That's just ... dragon stuff. Flights happen, Ella, and it's not like Hattie or me had much choice in the matter. Is that what this is about?" He manages to unfold himself and jog after her. "I did those things because I /care/ about you, Ella. You're like a little sister to me."
Fiorella keeps walking. "I know that," she nearly snaps back. She knows that its 'dragon stuff', but that doesn't mean it doesn't still bother her - in some ways it makes it that much more frustrating for her. "No." If she denies it'll be better. Right? That last comment though... "I don't need another brother," that said sharply.
"Sorry," D'kai sighs, falling back a step again and leaving Ella her space. "I know you know. I just meant. I didn't. It's not like I /meant/ to." This last all fades into a mumble, and the man crosses his arms, finally stops entirely. Dealing with young girls? Ones with /feelings/ nontheless? Not his forte. "I, uh. Well. Sorry?"
Fiorella crosses her arms as she turns back on him. "Everyone says that. 'You're like a little sister to me'," she repeats his earlier comment mockingly. "I already have two brothers and five sisters. I don't -need- another one," she tries to make that clear, though likely it already is. "Sorry?" He's sorry. She just glares a bit longer. "Don't bother," she finishes, stalking off towards the bowl.
Deke attempts one more cringing, "... Ella...!" But she's already gone, and the bronzerider is left to think about what he's done alone in the herb garden.
