Milk was an incredible film. Go see it. Sean Penn, I thought, did a surpurb job. I forgot I was watching Sean Penn and really felt I was watching Harvey Milk. And OH that embarassing Florida native-orange juice commercial barbie-evangical cunt Anita Bryant... one of the greatest evils since Hitler. From what I read she repented her sins, as in ( Read more... )

Will and I saw Milk last Monday in Memphis. We had a blast - we ended up sitting with people we'd been in line with to buy tickets, and they ragged Will about liking The Spirit, and then teasing him mercilessly about not liking 300 - and that he has to see it for the naked men. I was bawling.

Warning! Spoliers!

It's really really good - and I usually dislike Sean Penn. Will complained that Emile Hirsch wasn't gorgeous, but he did see a nekked Diego Luna, so he was happy. So was I, as a matter of fact.

Will commented for a movie about gays and gay lovers, there was not a lot of man on man action. All the sex was in dark light, or off camera but eluded to. I think that's a plus. You don't need rampant nudity and sex to sell a guy-girl love story, so it's not essential to a guy-guy story either. And while not as sparing as Brokeback Mountain, allusion makes vastly superior art to explicit. That's what porn is for :-P

Some of it was very sad and scary, especially the scene where Jack Lira hanged himself. Not scary in the horror movie sense, but frightening if you've ever had a suicide scare with somebody you love very much.

I also liked how Josh Brolin treated Dan White - he was presented as a guy who had serious issues, and I kind of felt sorry for him. It also meant I could take him seriously - whereas had they gone for the evil homo oppressor OMG he sucks!!!!!!!!!!!! caricature, then the film would have suffered.

I didn't like where they stopped; they should have done more with the twinkie defense than a postscript.

And the candlelight parade was very somber, because you know most of those men would be dead in five years or less . . .

They also needed to put in more Dianne Feinstein. I usually am not a fan of her either, but she deserved more than an off-camera "Hi Dianne."

Yes yes yes. I liked the format and how the script played out in the movie.

I thought the film had enough sauciness when it came to guy on guy action. Not as detailed as many other "gay films" which was great, but it would be nice for people like... say... my parents to watch without having to see a guy go down on another guy or rolling naked and slapping each other's ass.

The Jack Lira scene was very sad. The poor guy just had a lot of issues, as did all the characters. That made it interesting, as you mentioned, because it even made the "bad guys" look like sympathetic people.

I like the soundtrack too. :)
