The Asian Tsunami and its Aftermath
Plate tectonics and earthquakes are directly related to one another. Plate tectonics deal with the outer shell of the earth, the lithosphere. The lithosphere is made up of about 15 large ridged plates as well as some small plates. When the plates move against each other this creates earthquakes and volcanic activity. Earthquakes are caused by seismic waves. Seismic waves are the waves of energy caused by the sudden breaking of rock within the earth or an explosion. They are the energy that travels through the earth. Therefore from the seismic waves through the tectonic plates causes an earthquake.
The formation and movement on tsunami’s all depends on what is occurring underneath the water. A tsunami forms when two plates collide resulting in an earthquake in the ocean, which triggers a tsunami. At the epicenter of an earthquake the upward thrust of the seafloor displaces tons of water. The water displaced flows in a series of giant waves. As the waves approach the coast they lose velocity but increase height. Before the actual tsunami occurs the shore line could recede hundreds of meters.
• Evaluate the risk that tsunamis present to coastal dwellers in the U.S.(likelihood of tsunamis)
Two locations that were hit by the tsunami were Indonesia and Thailand. Indonesia’s northern and western coastal areas as well as outlaying islands were flooded and destroyed from the tsunami. Of just the Indonesian people 130,406 are dead, 36,836 are missing, and 504,518 are displaced. In many towns and villages concrete pads are all that is left of substantial structures, while scattered corrugated iron roofs crumpled like paper are the only evidence of flimsier houses. In Thailand there used to be an extensive amount of flatland, now after the tsunami there’s only a few meters above sea level. Hundreds of bungalows are destroyed. And the Phi Phi Islands were completely washed out to sea. Of just the people of Thailand 5,246 are dead, 8,457 are injured, and 4,499 are missing.
Unfortunately when a tsunami hits many homes and ways of living are destroyed. After the water hits the coast everything is mixed in with the water. Therefore the water is no longer good to drink and can cause diseases. One disease is Cholera. Cholera is diarrhea illness caused by infection in the intestine from a bacterium. Often times Cholera is mild or does not have any symptoms. When people do have it one experiences, rapid loss of body fluids which leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours. Cholera can be spread by drinking or eating food that contains the cholera bacterium. Often enough the contamination come from the feces of another person. Therefore in a tsunami people are going to the bathroom and drinking from the same water so it is very possible for it to be spread. Cholera can be treated with vaccines. Currently there are two vaccines that are located in some countries not including the United States. Another disease is Hepatitis A. Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. It is caused by bad personal hygiene and improper sanitation. After a tsunami has hit odds are sanitation is not likely to be good and nor ones hygiene. Treatment for Hepatitis A there is, Immune globulin, which is available for short-term prevention of hepatitis A virus infection. One last disease would be Leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospirosis. In humans it causes many symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, chills, muscle aches, and vomiting, and may include jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or a rash. If Leptospirosis is not treated it can cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress, and even in rare cases death. Leptospirosis is caused by contaminated water that contains urine of a contaminated animal. Therefore exposure to contaminated water would infect one. This can be treated with antibiotics such as doxycycline or penicillin.
Indonesia was country affected but the Asian tsunami that took place in late December 2004. Indonesia has a rainforest biome. Asian rainforests are the oldest on earth. Unfortunately rainforests are disappearing rapidly. Now they have the fewest primary rainforests than any other region in the equator region. Research has shown that where the tsunami hit was where the land was developed. Developed where there were many hotels and over used land, cut down trees and other native plants. If all those plants and trees had been there, less damage would have been done because the plants and trees would be able to anchor and absorb some of the energy from the wave hitting. With how the ecosystem from the development everything flooded and like the buildings the ecosystem was probably hurt. In Indonesia, 130,406 are dead, 36,836 are missing, and 504,518 are displaced. The cost of all the damages from the Tsunami is estimated at $4.5 billion-$5 billion. But the economy is expected to rise 5.9% in 2006. Although the tsunami was a very tragic event the economy is looking upward. Many people could describe to another of what a tragedy the Asian tsunami was in late 2004, it could not compare to the description from someone who lived through it. Petra, the supermodel happened to be vacationing with her fiancé or boyfriend. She said she noticed that the weather had been a little off that day. And the water line had been receding. It got to a point where it was so far back that it didn’t seem right. So she started to leave incase something was wrong. Suddenly it had been too late and the tsunami struck getting hold of everyone and everything possible on the coast. From that point on it was chaos.
