Day 1...... Milano
So far I haven't figured out how to use my phone over here so for those of you who I was supposed to check in with when I landed.... sorry. At least I made it and I'm safe.
Turns out, I need to learn Italian. I don't see how the mexicans last so long in the U.S. without learning English. I feel so alienated, yet the view is so beautiful that I have forgotten about that.
Our plane flew in over the Swiss Alps this morning on the way to Milano. It was completely breath-taking. The peaks were covered in snow and reached so hi i seemed as if they would graze the bottom of the plane. Once in Milan I was amazed at the number of advertisements and billboards around. Unfortunately I couldn't make many of them out as my bus driver drove like a crazed maniac. Houston traffic has nothing on Italy. Ditto as per the pollution (at least in Milano).
Within 10 min. of checking into my hotel I met a guy from Virgina who's finishing up his last days of travel here. He gave me some amazing advise on what to do and where to go. I'm about to dump a tremendous portion of my budget into getting a 21 day first class EuroRail pass that will allow me to travel anywhere in Europe at no additional charge. I justified paying so much by determining that I am going to make most of my travels overnight so that I won't have to pay for a hostel. On that note.... Hostels are so damn expensive right now (at least in Italy) thanks to the new pope bringing in thousand upon thousands of travelers.
I originally planned on staying around Italy but since I get to travel anywhere in Europe I want to with my EuroRail pass I think I'm going to branch out. Not sure where yet but I'll keep you posted.
How pathetic am I... within 10 min of stepping off the bus at the central station in Milano, I went straight for the o-so-familiar golden arches. My justification for that (although lame) was that from what I hear the food in Milano is kinda crappy so I'm gonna save all of my expensive meals for good places.
