"So, you can, like, talk to the dead?" asks the girl in the green mini-skirt.

Miles blinks before answering. "Yeah, but I've never had an actually conversation with a dead girl. That's Hurley's thing."

She pushes off the tree she was leaning against and smacks the strawberry gum she'd been chewing.

"First time for everything," she purrs, sauntering closer to the medium. She runs a hand over his shoulder.

When he doesn't answer, she asks another question. "What've we been missing? Kate still fickle with her boys?"

"We?" he responds, "As in, you and your dead buddies pal around?"

Shannon let's out a laugh.

"Wow. For someone who's supposed to speak our language, you're really slow. Jacob never tell you that the Island dead are different that the real world dead?"

She cannot believe that he hasn't already figured this out. Regardless of his being oblivious, she's starved for new conversation. And it's been ages since she's come into contact with a living person. She can't help but rest her pale hands on his sturdy shoulders and lean her face in to breath his scent. She lets her eyes close to feel that hint of sensation.

"What are you doing?" Miles asks, a bit creeped out by a dead girl sniffing his neck.

Her warm, dead eyes snap back open.

"You don't understand how long it's been since I've been with someone other than Boone, Paulo, Charlie, and that one science-y guy. He was sweet, but the red-headed girl told me to 'keep my skank hands to myself.'"

Miles, not ever having the chance to know Shannon, was surprised at her flippancy.

"Are you telling me Daniel effing Faraday slept with you?"

She tucked her blonde hair behind her ear with a laugh.

"Yeah, well...Sometimes I get the urge to find a shy, smart guy rather than the bad boy, you know? And he was the only one available."

Miles tried to take in all of this information. No wonder Hurley always acted so confused. He had to deal with this kind of thing all. the. time. He dug the heels of his hands into his eyes to alleviate some pressure.

He felt her hands on him again, fingering the hem of his grey shirt.

"Whoa there!"

He pushed her hands away, and she let out a huff of annoyance.

"What is wrong with you?" she asks, hands on slender hips.

"I don't screw dead girls, so if that's all you're interested in, I think I'm gonna be leaving. Nice talkin' to you Shannon."

He took a step back from her and started his way back the way he came, completely forgetting the errand Sawyer had sent him on in the first place. He walked a few yards before turning back to see if she was still there. And she was. Her head cocked to the side slightly, arms wrapped around herself as she watched him go. Her legs looked cold in the beginning twilight, but he knew it didn't really matter what the temperature was, for her anyway.

Miles realized that her actions hadn't just been a come on. Hadn't just been a way to screw with his head. She was just a lost little girl that never had the chance to find her way...
