Chapter One

The Miskatonic University was not the largest school in New England, nor did it have a reputation for being a place of science. It was however renowned for being fertile ground for new (and sometimes radical) ideas. The matter of scientific education did not worry Daniel Faraday as he already had great knowledge of the subject. What he did need was a non restrictive environment where he could freely (although secretively) pursue his experiments without being suspected of illicit activities.

The only thing he currently required was a private place to live in, and that is why he left the boarding house and what brought him to the home of Karl Fritz. He knocked on the door, a brown valise held tightly in his left hand.

“Yes?” A brown haired youth in his early twenties opened the door, a skinny blond of about the same age stood behind him. Her hair was tousled.

“Daniel Faraday. I’m here about the room.” He said.

“Oh yes, right this way, Mr. Faraday.” Said the youth, offering him a small grin.

“Daniel.” He said. Karl nodded.

He opened the door wider, allowing Daniel entrance.

“I’m Karl Fritz and this is Megan Halsey,” he said gesturing towards the girl. She offered him a timid hand. Daniel gave her a smile and shook it. He held in a snort of derision as he took in both persons’ disheveled appearance.

“If you come with me Daniel, I’ll give you the grand tour.”

Daniel complied and fallowed him down the hall. Megan also fallowed.

It was a modest home. Not the best he had been in and definitely not the worst he had seen. It was two stories and its style spoke of no earlier age then Edwardian, undoubtedly it was one of the newer homes in the district.

Overall Karl was unsure of what to think of his possible tenant, he was calm composed and gave the expression of being rather mechanical in his views. He hadn’t even flinched when his cat, Rufus darted out from a table in front of him.

After seeing the first and second floors Daniel spoke up. “Does this home have a basement?”

“Oh yes, its right this way, I hardly ever use it.”

Daniel smiled when he saw the basement, it was perfect, no windows, an abundance of space, and its temperature was cool.

“Would you mind if I used it?” he asked “I have some equipment I brought with me from Europe.”

“Sure.”

“Great. I have some things outside, should I bring them in now?” He said.

Megan turned towards Karl. “Look I have to go. I think you and Mr. Faraday have a lot to talk about, before you make any decisions.”

“Well I’ve already made mine,” he said as he took out a bundle of bills from his coat pocket. “So do we have a deal?”

Megan’s jaw dropped as she turned her head to look at Karl.

Before either of them had a chance to reply, Daniel cut in. “You’ll hardly know I’m here- except on the first on the month.” He held the money out to Karl.

Karl regained his composure and took the money with an awkward smile. Megan continued to stare in disbelief.

“Well I guess we have a deal.”

Chapter Two

Life continued for Karl Fritz as it always had, Faraday was quiet almost unnaturally so. There were often times when he forgot that he was even sharing his home. Megan was always quick to point it out though.

The medical school of Miskatonic was in the most north eastern corner of the University. To the right of the building there was the Student Union and a small diner. The medical laboratories were in the basement of hospital along with the morgue and the boiler room.

Dr. Richard Hill stood in the front of the class next to a dead body on a gurney. His blank monotone voice filled Karl Fritz with a bleak sense of hopelessness.

“I said class dismissed.”

Karl snapped out of his reverie and blinked twice.

“Of course Dr. Hill.” He said quickly as he tried to rise to his feet in an effort to put as much distance between him and the corpse.

“Well since you don’t seem eager to leave perhaps you’d like to do me quick favor.”

“Anything sir.” He muttered

“Take Mr. Anderson back down to the morgue will you?”

Karl nodded sadly knowing to well that well that the activity wasn’t optional. He tried to focus on something pleasant then the dead corpse on the gurney as he rolled it down the hall. He had just managed to conjure up a pleasant image of Meg when he was interrupted for the second time.

“How can you teach such drivel? These people are here to learn and you’re shutting their minds before they even have a chance!”

He was taken aback as he registered the voice as that of his quiet roommate, Daniel Faraday. He had been the last person Karl would have suspected to talk disrespectfully to a professor.

“It is going to be a pleasure to fail you, Mr. Faraday.” Karl recognized the voice as Dr. Abbot’s who was usually mild mannered.

Dr. Abbot stormed off in the opposite direction down the hall. Karl turned to see Daniel standing in the empty lab, smiling. He muttered something about the professor’s theories being ridiculously out dated, gathered his belongings and left for his next class.

Karl frowned, pondering his companion’s mood swing and continued down the hall toward the morgue.

---

Daniel Faraday paced noiselessly in his room. The Miskatonic Medical School had not been his first choice but neither had been the early twentieth century. It was however the most unlikely place anyone would look for him. He snorted angrily; Desmond had been a fool ignoring the success of his experiments, and focusing simply on the condition of the specimens afterwards, he knew that the reagent needed work, and progress would come eventually.

After all, he had all the time in the world.
