After work yesterday I went to see Harry Potter OotP with a bunch of people. Red Robin for dinner (where the ducks were walking around under our table and freaked us out by having identity crises- they were making seagull noises which was just bizarre). Then waited in line from about 8:00 - 9:00 when they let us into the theater... Played tons of games (I never, Korean slapping game, war, mafia, etc).
I don't know if it's a rule of thumb or something, but at around 12 my brain starts to shut down, and I just think that everything's funny. But I wasn't the only one... I'll have to watch the movie again (IMAX!) to see if it was just that I was tired and finding things funny when they weren't, or they actually were.
The movie flowed nicely (loved the newspaper picture transitions) but the editing (plotwise) was kind of choppy... it was quite short considering OotP was the longest book. I think. right? But ... there was a lot of subtext (Harry/Sirius, Remus/Sirius). And Harry's "We've been going at it for hours, if we could just take a rest..." (to Snape during the Occlumency) ... I had to resist the urge to say "That's what she/he said" on many occasions ("You know you deserve to be punished"... yes. enough said - it was to Harry.)
Things I liked:
- Fred and George's roles expanded
- Neville is a bigger part
- Luna, ftw. Loved her entrance, and the thestral parts.
- The set design - Dept. of Mysteries was appropriately creepy with the mirrors, black reflective walls, etc)
- CGI - the wispy apparating wizards and the spells, including Patronus looked much spiffier this time around. But one thing that bothers me is how the dementors keep changing from movie to movie. Keep them the same, damn it!
- The kids are all better actors now (Dan Radcliffe esp.)
- Surprisingly lighthearted movie considering the plot (all the stuff with Filch / DA)
- The flashbacks/dreams (Harry's visions were pretty trippy and crazy, just like I imagined they would be
- Sirius' death (which I hate the IDEA of it) was beautiful, elegant and the way I imagined he would have died..... a fitting death for him. but... WHERE WAS THE 2WAY MIRROR?!
- harry/Sirius relationship - we got to see them interact more!
Things I didn't like/wanted in the movie:
- Bigger roles for Ron/Hermione/Ginny, even though I don't like Ginny. Because she's an important person plotwise.
- More on Kreacher - emphasized his evil creepiness
- More of the conversation with Dumbledore at the end about survival
- MORE of Snape's worst memory! I want to see Young!Marauders, DAMN IT!
- More Malfoy - but I did like the Inquisitorial Squad... Purple ribbons!
Work has been exhausting. We were outside for a lot of Tuesday, collecting twigs/natural things to dip in ink and draw on the paper, and filling it in with mixed media. But little K-2 kids just can't sit still. I'm exhausted trying to get them to do the projects.
I'm really dark (tan) now... it's kind of odd considering I haven't been outside - this whole school year pretty much. It's a so-called heat wave here, with temps in the low 90s. Not too bad considering Orlando (hometown!) was always like this. But it's been a long time since I've been there.
Watched About a Boy the other day with mom, because it was on and I wanted to watch the Dead Duck Day scene again. But I ended up watching the whole movie. And falling in love with the OST in a way I hadn't the first time. Badly Drawn Boy did the OST, and he's awesome... great music! I can't believe I missed him at Bumbershoot last year.
Alright. I got home about 3AM last night, and woke up at 8:00 to go to work at 8:45 until 5:30. I'm dead tired. I'm gonna upload Straylight Run to my sony and then pass out to Badly Drawn Boy
