because it's right.
Went to see Letters From Iwo Jima today.
I really don't like war movies. They just never really resonate with me, and I can't really ever tell who's who, and what the hell is going on.
That said, Iwo Jima was a really touching story with some great moments (and not to mention some amazing shots). But the best part I think, was the acting. Ken Watanabe (so wasted in his role as Chairman in Geisha) is just brilliant - so restrained at times and yet you can see how conflicted he is over the war... and Kazunari Ninomiya who played Saigo was just amazing ... the scenes with his wife were just heartbreaking.
Yeah, Clint Eastwood definetely deserves his nomination for Best Director for this - it's amazing that he captured the essence of that Japanese conviction (suicide missions etc) and it's kind of strange that an American director would do this better than most other directors. But yeah, I'm definitely now a fan of Clint Eastwood (even though it does piss me off that he wins EVERYTHING). But at least now I know he deserves it.
And the music in Iwo Jima is so beautiful, and haunting... and I'm going to go listen to it right now. After I finish listening to Phillip Glass (god, Illusionist and Notes on a Scandal are just beautiful!!!!!!)
Oh, and Friday, saw Casino Royale again and got reminded of just how damn attractive Daniel Craig is, and how gorgeous Eva Green is, and how entertaining it was. Definitely holds up on second viewing.
And now I REALLY want to see Pan's Labyrinth.
I've just realized that now I've seen all the Oscar Nominees for Best Picture. Huzzah! First time I've ever done that.
Little Miss Sunshine - a perfect little dysfunctional family comedy
The Departed - one of his best crime thrillers. but not as good as Infernal Affairs.
Letters From Iwo Jima - a wonderful war movie
The Queen - very interesting look at post-Diana's death...
Babel - way too depressing for me, but a nice international movie.
I'm definitely pulling for Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed but I wouldn't be mad if Iwo Jima won either... If Babel does, it'll be because it's international and just like Crash (biggest pile of shit ever) and The Queen was good, mostly because of Helen Mirren.
