It isn’t until Shannon finally lets go of Boone’s body - handing him reluctantly to Jack and Sawyer, who will prepare him for burial - that Sun notices the blood staining the young blonde girl’s clothes and skin. It’s streaked down the front of her shirt, her bare arms, even around her collarbone.
Sun can think of nothing else to do but to offer her hand to Shannon, who takes it numbly; clinging to her as if she’s the last source of protection on the island that killed her brother. Her eyes are glazed with shock, her breath hitching asthmatically.
Shannon doesn’t seem to realise who Sun is; just that she’s comforting in her silence as she leads her wordlessly to the alcove the residents of the caves use for bathing. Shannon’s gaze stays fixed on some distant point as Sun strips off the younger woman’s clothes, running a damp cloth over the bloodied areas until they are clean again.
Sun’s imagined this for so long, the time when Shannon would be so pliable under her touch. Yet the way it’s come about is terribly, undeniably wrong. She shouldn’t feel this satisfied now, and she knows it. Only she can’t help it.
