Car ownership is for suckaz

Sarah just called to inform me that the "new" Nissan died.  She's currently stranded on the highway waiting for AAA to come tow her back to the city from somewhere out in East Bay. Probably a transmission problem.  We just put a new starter and 2 new front axles in it a week ago.  It was supposed to be a reliable, low-maintenance car.  So far it's cost us damn near $1000 in repairs, and we haven't even had it for 4 months.  I hate used cars.  Moreover, I hate owning a car.  Yes, technically it's Sarah's car, but I think of it as "our" car, as I do reap a lot of the benefits of ownership... and I also share in the miseries.  I specifically sold my car to be rid of problems like these, and yet I find myself right back where I was... dealing with maintenance issues right and left. :\  My motorcycle had a flat tire yesterday, and the battery is dying. I have an appointment to get it tuned up in a couple weeks.

I'm torn between a burning desire to become a better mechanic so I can fix this sorta crap myself, and a burning desire to be rid of all things gasoline powered so I don't have anything to fix.

In other news, no, I don't have a job yet, nor have I looked for one, cuz I value my time more than I value a paycheck.

I'm pondering a trip to Portland, since I have plenty of time on my hands these days.  I've also been watching a lot of RiffTrax.  Vehicle problems aside, I'm happy and doing well.  How are you guys/gals?
