Life, Work, Visitors

Sarah n' I just got back a little while ago from seeing Avenue Q at the Orpheum (does every city have an Orpheum?) It was very entertaining. The puppeteering was sorta strange to get used to at first, but it wasn't distracting either. Overall it was very clever. The line for the men's bathroom at intermission was 10X as long as the line for the women's room. Clearly the apocalypse is nigh.

The past few weeks have been rather busy. First, my family (parents n' Alice) came to visit along with Sarah's family (parents n' Matthew) so they could all meet their future in-laws. I think that's how that works anyway... do siblings of married people get to be in-laws? I guess so, I can't imagine what else to call them. Everyone got along well, thankfully. Matthew made everyone some beautiful cutting boards, since he's now doing an apprenticeship with this guy. Our parents treated us to lots of good food, and we stuffed ourselves silly for nearly a week. Then, the day after they left, internetsdave and attickah arrived to visit, which, in turn also meant spending lots of fun time with dndupree and theyak. We went hiking in Marin, went to Japantown, went to Clement Street (the other Chinatown) ate lots of yummy places, and then the weekend ended.

Which brings me to the topic of work. My company moved offices the same weekend the families were in town, so I was unable to help with the move. The moving of the office stuff went smoothly. The moving of the internet service was utterly botched. We arrived to an office with ZERO connectivity. Mind you, we are a company that can do virtually nothing without net access. We sat on our asses for 4 1/2 days. It was a waste of everyone's time. Why we pushed for the move to happen before even having verified that the net was switched on at the new place, I have no idea. Whoever was responsible for that decision should be fired. I'm guessing it was the CEO.

Anyway, since we didn't have internet at the new office, we couldn't move the servers over to the new office, since they need to be online in order for our clients to function. Clients are priority #1, of course, so yeah... we moved all our office workstations to the new office, but the server(s) with all the useful data, remained at the old office. I had a lot of rubberband fights with Will and Paul, and watched some movies, and basically did jack shit all that week. We got connected Friday morning, and by late Friday afternoon, right about the time everyone was going home for the weekend, the network and internet was finally up and running at the new office. Yay.

The old office was a converted warehouse space. It had a huge vaulted roof with skylights, and was basically one big room. It had a very open and family-like atmosphere. We'd play frisbee and catch and be able to shout to one another when necessary. The new office is a typical cubicle farm. It's got a 9 ft hanging-panels ceiling, fluorescent lighting, cubicle dividers, and an ugly but functionally dirt-disguising carpet. I hate it. I hate the lighting. I hate the walls. I hate the dividers. I hate the management for choosing the space. I hate the management for positioning me, Will and Kris in the only portion of office space with no natural lighting. We work in a sort of mega-cubicle designed to accommodate 4 people. It also doubles as a hallway to get to the break room. It sucks ass.

I've suddenly become very bitter about my job. Whereas before I kinda liked the management, I'm growing to loathe them. They've made some really shitty moves lately, and lost any/all respect I had for them. Apparently, on top of my own irritations with the workplace, I've heard, through the grapevine, that the company is in really poor financial shape, and could basically go belly up at any moment. We're literally hiding our new address from investors. I don't know why, and I'm afraid to ask. This company is rapidly becoming the sort of place I do not want anything to do with.

My friend/coworker Paul just got another job. His last day is Friday. Will, my other coworker/buddy is apparently applying for other jobs as well. I think I need to get my head out of the sand. It's time to jump ship... I just hate the swimming part until I find another ship worth boarding. :\

At least this weekend should offer some fun diversions. dortz, voxen, borcherm, pekabess_, and chookbobberki will be in town for a wedding. :)
