I saw a woodchuck today. Standing about 10 ft away from me, digging in the grass, and eating something. It looked right at me and didn't move. Just as I was thinking about all of those warnings about woodland animals who are not afraid of humans having rabies, one of the kids from my class walked up behind me. "Look," I said, "It's a friggin' woodchuck!"
And then he said he had thought it was a beaver.
I was being lazy and didn't want to seem like a know-it-all so I didn't say this out loud, but in my head I was thinking: "A beaver! Do you even know how big a beaver is? And how big their tails are? Beavers can grow to be upwards of 60 pounds and over 4 feet in length, this woodchuck is smaller than my cat!"
Needless to say, ever since I saw a beaver (dead on the side of the road) I have been amazed at their size and also how much they actually resemble the beavers in cartoons.
