So. Here I am. There has been some crazy shit going on here in RL, so I haven't really felt like posting anything, or doing anything. But then I totally forgot most people I talk to online are off reading the seventh HP book right now, so at least I haven't missed anything! A small comfort ( Read more... )

Lol. You suck. ;)

I do know a few Chinese phrases already thanks to the adorable lady I worked with in my old dept. She taught me: How are you? I'm fine, thank you, good morning, good afternoon.... erm, Oh and I'm hungry. Lol. Course I forgot half of those already. But since most of the people in my lab are Chinese, I can just ask them how to say whatever I want. :D And they ask me questions about English all the time. So we're even. I used to know the very bestest swear words, learned dutifully from "Firefly". But I forgot most of those too, now. :( I need to refresh. If you don't use it, you lose it. I know that first hand from Spanish. It's almost all gone now, too. Although I was quite proud of myself the other day, I translated a whole page of instructions, lol.

I heard from our intern here, who used to take some kendo, that you can't wash the armor, so it gets really stinky after awhile. Is that true? If so, that sucks. Lol. Plus I don't really have the money to spend on armor, but maybe I will by the time I get to that point. We'll see I guess. :P

How is Aikido? I'm trying to figure out what would be the best martial art to take (besides kendo, I think I'm sold on that one), and I know they also offer Aikido here. Have you taken any others?

Real Jedi... hrm.... *strokes chin* Yes, that will do. I even have my robe already. :D

Haha, I remembered that one Chinese phrase...Diu ne see faht. (Not to be reproduced in polite company).

I had a Hungarian b/f once who spoke Russian and I've met a few from time to time. One fellow was a former Soviet officer, who had lost an eye in a real saber duel back in the 50's. :O

I've learned that Fabreeze works really well on the armor, plus airing it out right away after practice. Thus far, I have not had problems. It is a rather expensive sport initially with weapons (One shinai is $25-$90) and armor costing anywhere from $300 +. However, the outlay is spaced out a bit. Tuition is minimal at $25/month. e-bogu.com has a lot of deals.

Aikido was also a blast. There were two schools that I was aware of, Ki Society and Aikikai, which I took. Ki Society was a soft art, focused on meditation and the spiritual aspects. Aikikai was more physical, focused on throws, holds, and weapons. The monetary outlay was pretty light with just a gi (uniform), belt, and bokken (wooden sword) for maybe around $50. Higher ranks got a hakama (black pleated pants).

I remember when I made a higher rank and sensei threw me for the first time after I put on my new belt. He was very gentle up to that point, but on this one, I hit the floor full speed. As I wobbled around getting back up, he said I was senpai (higher rank) now and I had earned the right to get smashed. :P

I'm surprised by how many SW fanatics there are in my kendo dojo. I've already dispensed a few KOTOR game tips.
