Timing is Everything

Jul 27, 2009 22:24

This is demonstrated to me daily, but never quite so much as the last few days. I give to you a few cases to showcase this principle of time.

Case #1: The Premature Celebration
Early in the melee to get everything launched for San Diego Comic-Con last week, some hapless web monkey posted the copy for a contest on the Hasbro website. In that copy, it listed that the winner of the contest would have the honor of getting to have their diorama displayed "at the 2010 Star Wars Celebration." And the intarwebs killed a few more hamsters. Turns out, that little nugget wasn't supposed to be announced at all, because LFL is STILL trying to pin down a location and a time. It took about an hour to reach the floor of the con, but reach it, it did, and how. So, when the SUPER CAPSLOCK SDCC STAR WARS SPECTACULAR PANEL OF DOOM happened, everyone was on pins and needles (Hotels.com queued and waiting w/ the rumored cities loaded up in separate windows) to here the news.... Wah wah waaaaaaaah... There is no news. LFL was not ready to make that announcement, and the ones they were there to make fell on mostly disappointed ears. By the end of Friday, I'm pretty sure there was another web monkey wandering the streets of a city near you, wondering what the hell happened. Easy, timing is everything.

Case #2: PAY ATTENTION TO THE BIRTHDAY REMINDERS!
So, I missed a few birthdays over the weekend because, while I saw those reminders come in, I got busy and neglected to look at them. When it was too late I saw other people had not been so foolish and wished the folks a very merry. I did manage to catch chauncey10  on IM and gave her my best wishes, but it's not the same. So, I owe chauncey10  and wobbear  major birthday wishes, and in order to give penance for my horrible manners, I owe both of you a fic of your choosing. After all, timing is everything.

Case #3: The fantastically talented and fortuitous wobbear
So, you might have recalled my saying recently that I was about to finish off the beastly epic Discovery Series. It has been a long and deeply rewarding journey, but the time has finally come. In fact, I finished the last of the graphics in the wee hours this morning, and the final edits at lunch today. I left work today ready to head home to upload the whole thing onto my website and at FF.net after dinner. Upon my arrival home, I was meet with a rather odd thing. It was the distinctive smirking box from Amazon.com. But judging from the other things on the box, I knew it to be a simple case of recycling (because I had only ordered my book & cd the night before, and try as they might, Amazon has not yet perfected the art of being the Psychic retailer). When I opened the box, out popped a wonderful card. The kind of card someone who plays with words for a living would send. And while I loved the card, the part of the box that intrigued me most was cushioned inside the box, inside a packing envelope, inside the bubble wrap. There it was, staring me right in the face, on the very day I was about to post the absolutely last chapter of the very same story that introduced me to this wonderful human being (and incredible Italian speller), quite possibly the most beautiful gift I could never have imagined getting. Proving, without a shadow of a doubt....Timing is Everything!

If I was someone who cried...I most certainly would have been doing just that. As it was, I was smiling from ear to ear. My mother, my father, my niece and even my idiot baby brother marveled at the wonder of it all.

In honor of such an amazing gift from a beautiful, talented and incredibly remarkable person, I had to give it a special home. When good friends give you something from their hearts, you want to keep it close, where you can see it often, where it reminds you just how damn lucky you are to have them in your life. So, when I get stuck working on a story, or my Photoshopping is driving me insane, I can look up from desk in my home office and see this.

Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am touched more than I can express right now. It has been an emotional roller coaster of a day, and receiving this today quite literally saved my sanity. Thank you.

grateful, friends, birthday, writing, csi, fanfic, humor
