1. beauty pill:
   Chad Clark's post-Smart Went Crazy band. Made my favorite record of 2004. Twice they've played Boston, and twice I've had to miss them.
2. crossword puzzles:
   Every Sunday Sarah and I team up for the mammoth crossword in the Boston Sunday Globe magazine. From time to time I make crosswords as well, though not with enough frequency to attempt to sell them.
3. frank black:
   I actually prefer his solo stuff to the pixies -- "Teenager of the Year" is one of the great records of the 90s. His new country-ish record "Honeycomb" is good too.
4. jeremy from boise:
   A friend of mine whose record I put out a couple of years ago. His name is Jeremy, and he lives in Boise, Idaho. Mostly now he plays in a band with his son, the aptly named Monster Dudes.
5. mr. bungle:
   The polymathic Mike Patton's first band, capable of splicing a handful of opposing genres into a single song. Their 1999 album "California" was recorded on a 108-track machine, and they still ran out of room.
6. politics:
   Ever since Bush "took" office, I find myself deeply concerned for the state of the country. I wish the Republicans actually understood the implications of the phrase "What Would Jesus Do," and I wish the Democrats would collectively grow a spine.
7. shiner:
   Kansas City rock band that put out four brilliant records. Singer Allen Epley the only singer in recent history to put the mid-90s alt-rock vocal snarl to good use. "Lula Divinia"-era member Tim Dow maybe the best drummer ever.
8. sugar:
   Bob Mould's post-Husker Du trio wrote perfect pop songs. Can make quadruple-tracked harmony vocals sound elegant.
9. the nationale blue:
   Friends of mine who did a split 7" with Shark & Bear for one of their European tours. Splintered its members into Guillermo Sexo and Big Bear.
10. words for snow:
    My recording engineer's long-hibernating band, always almost finished with their full-length. Incapable of getting a decent review anywhere despite being really, really good.
