pa·tri·ot·ism
n.
Love of and devotion to one's country.
Nowhere does patriotism infer that one is a Republican or a Democrat. It is not about following law or about doing what is deemed proper by government standards.
pa·tri·ot
n.
One who loves, supports, and defends one's country.
Killing terrorists does not make you a patriot nor does whining about a lost election. Patriotism is not about a side. It is about what you believe at any individual moment and how you act, and more importantly how history reflects your actions. Patriots that we remember from our history books like George Washington, were considered terrorists by the court of George III. Patriotism is about fundamental beliefs. Fundamentalism is dangerous because there is no right or wrong there is what I believe and You believe.
War is not always about patriotism. The Revolutionary war which is by and large depicted as a battle of patriotism vs. tyranny. Unfortunately there is far more besides patriotism that motivated that conflict. The above is referenced for example only.
All this was prompted by a TV commercial for a new WWII game. Something about "The Big One" always touches on a nerve. It was a fantastically violent and horrific war and beautiful in that there will never again be a conflict with such a large impact or fought on such a scale [emote]hope[/emote].
For those interested the commercial was for Medal of Honor: European Assault which I will be playing soon as I am a sucker for a good WWII game.
