High School
For Tess

We say, then
That this is how it goes
A four-year cycle of high school life,
Splintered and patched.
Friendships formed, and dissolved
And found again.
Or crumbled forever in some cynical abyss,
Sliced open by the cattiest of knives.
The Made-for-TV drama gets old, I guess
Though we've worn our hearts on our sleeves,
Stumbled through emotional minefields, delivered ourselves from the most devastating oh heartbreaks.
Four years of early am chatter and conversations gone cold.
Of sifting through memories, mixing moments of human touch with shards of broken glass.
It's all painful, I suppose, though not without its beauty.
I bid adieu to it all, and wish for friendships flown and friendships found
To keep its way inside my heart, a reminder of all lost, and all gained.

After everything my mom has heard, this is what she wrote to me.
