[Taking advantage of the beautiful day, Yukimura is sitting outside on the grass, his Eevee curled up next to him with her head resting on his leg. He's petting her gently, and he seems distant, quiet - less commanding than he has been before.]When you lose - a Pokemon battle, or anything else that's important to you - do you think that it's fair ( Read more... )

They're just some things I've been thinking about, that's all. [A liiittle bit evasive, there.] It is a tough question, I suppose that's why I'm wondering what others think.

I've always believed that you can learn from a loss - that you can even learn more from a loss than from a win. That doesn't really make losing any easier, though.

[ from the looks of things, Rise is taking advantage of the beautiful day by clinging to a Rapidash's neck. Pardon the somewhat windblown look. She appears to be just as bright as ever, though, albeit a little startled by the query. ]

Whoa, Yukimura-san, that's kind of a headache of a question! Questions?

[He smiles a little at the sight, it looks like she's enjoying herself, at least.]

It is a little difficult, isn't it? I've just had a lot of things on my mind, I suppose.

[ someone has to smile to counteract Yosuke's cranky sleep deprivation. ]

Hm, weeell... I don't really like to lose, either, but sometimes it's out of your hands completely.

[That is a hard job, Rise.]

I try not to think that way, but I suppose it's true. Sometimes no matter what you do, you lose.

D'you remember, two years ago, when I first joined the tennis team...

[ he's pretty sure Yukimura remembers this, so he just trails off. ]

I remember it very well.

[He smiles - it's a fond memory for him, being the first time they met, but maybe not for Akaya.]

No one on our team likes losing - I'd always thought that was a good thing.

Y'know, that was probably actually the worst day of my entire life. [ ... ] But I guess it was good for me. I dunno - for me, it was like, I got too satisfied with myself and that really did me in. So at that time, it was better for me to lose than to win. But I don't think that's true all the time.

I dunno, I don't think about this kinda stuff very much.

Hmm.

[He's quiet for a moment. He doesn't actually think that's the case with him, after all he did to even be capable of playing again - but maybe, somewhere deep down, it is?]

We all have to think about it sometime, but it doesn't do much good to dwell on it. You've grown so much since then, Akaya.

If you lose, it just means you're a weak bastard or you fucked up. Ain't hard to figure out.

Generally it does mean that, although not in such severe terms. But there are a lot of factors that go into a loss.

Oh. You mean like whether or not you're still alive to kick their ass in return later on after a training montage?

I meant more like... luck. Or chance, maybe. But yes, that too, I suppose.

[This is so relevant to his interests, it's not even funny.]

I don't think talking about fairness is going to change anything - yeah, some things aren't fair and some times it doesn't matter how well-prepared you are or how much you want to win... it just wasn't meant to happen. Maybe it's a matter of luck or maybe that's just the way life works, as terrible as it can be.

No, I guess it doesn't. The world isn't a fair place, after all, but maybe - well, sometimes it's difficult when you realize that's true. We all want to believe deep down that it's different for us, but that's impossible, isn't it?

Well, it's not impossible to believe it but I think in the end it'll only hurt us.

Hard work and experience will always be the most important thing in any... well, battle but there's always going to be days when that's not enough. An inch in the wrong direction, a minute too late, one card short of a full house... the distance between winning and losing really can be paper thin.

You seem to know what you're talking about. I suppose I just have a hard time losing... I've never been the type who likes it, and when something important is at stake, it's even more difficult. How do you deal with that?
