Blocks, Beats, Boats, and Booze

Monday is not computing for me today. Perhaps it’s because I’m not actually supposed to be at work today, but I am. I wasn’t supposed to work Friday either, but I did. I had allegedly taken them off as comp time for the nutty amount of work I’d previously put in… but then a new project came up on Thursday and I figured ‘well I might as well just get this paper edit out of the way before next week’ and then I figured ‘well it’s a short week with the holiday anyway, so I’d better just go in Monday to get my shit done for the monthly reports.

Or perhaps it’s because the weekend was good and full and tuckered me out nicely, as a proper weekend should. I started my weekend on Thursday night (still naively thinking I wasn’t working Friday). Sushi dinner was consumed with friends from pool, then I hung around for a bit watching J’s new pool team play some matches. Afterwards I was treated to a zippy-zippy-vroom-vroom night drive through the Santa Cruz mountains with The Punk Who Is Moving to SoCal my friend.

Saturday we did some planning for the yard terracing that we want to do. J and I had previously measured the rise and run all the way up the yard using a clever little sliding-T-yard-stick tool that J had come up with, and from those measurements I made a nifty little profile plot of our hill’s grade. Now we have sketched out a preliminary retaining wall plan, calculated the number of wall blocks that it will require, and tried not to cringe too much at the estimated cost for said number of blocks. Later that night we went to Blur for our once-a-month dancing binge into the wee hours.

On Sunday we got up early and drove out to Sac to take a float down the American River as a belated birthday celebration for the younger bro. One raft, two siblings, two cousins, two parents, one roommate, three SO’s, three coolers full of booze, and a river full of vengence cold water. At the end of the float we had a big relaxing picnic in a park with big rolling swaths of green grass and huge, luxuriously shady oak trees, perfect for lazing out our water-logged and sun-soaked bums.

Lessons Learned:
  1. If you tell your team that you will taken some days off next week, and you send out a follow-up email stating which days you will be taking off, and even if they reply affirmatively to that email, they will inevitably forget by the next week and still assume you are at work.
  2. I need to learn how to take vacation days without stressing out about what I’m not getting done.
  3. I can dance sober.
  4. I can swim drunk.
  5. A lot of girls need to grow a pair are really girly.
  6. Vodka Gimlets are my new go-to bar drink of choice.
