U.S. Agriculture Secretary is probably a cabinet position that is rarely considered by a lot of folks. For the US it's sort of a homely aspect of life. However these days the Ag Secretary is involved in much more than just cows and pigs. There's a lot at stake. So I signed the petition to try to caputure the attention of the Congress regarding the approval of this Obama nomination. I think Vilsack is the wrong choice, and I'm asking all the US folks to look at what we can probably expect from Vilsack and think about contacting your legislators to voice your opinion. I don't expect all of you will disapprove as I do, however it'd be great if you at least thought about it. I'm very much against lettting big agribusiness dominate the agriculture scene in the US, and I think the Agriculture Secretary should have a much more family farm/organic friendly bent than Vilsack seems to be capable of.
Here's an email I received after going to the Organic Consumer's Association site to sign a petition:
"Thank you for taking action. Your email will be sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee and the President-Elects' office.
President-Elect Obama's choice for Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, will be responsible for directing the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its $90 billion annual budget, including the National Organic Program, food stamp and nutrition programs, and agriculture subsidies. But you can help stop his confirmation.
Please join the Organic Consumers Association and help us stop Vilsack's Senate confirmation and lobby for a Secretary of Agriculture that reflects our organic and social justice values. Urge your friends and family to take action today:
