I stayed up late reading Okay for Now because, quite simply, it's an amazing book and I couldn't put it down. So this morning when I woke up unexpectedly early, I thought to myself, I'll read for a half hour while I drink my coffee. Before I shower. Before I write. Now, I know you're going to think I couldn't stick to my allotted half hour, but I did. In fact, at the end of chapter 5 I smiled, closed the book, closed my eyes, and enjoyed the genius of Gary D. Schmidt for a little while. And then I went to my laptop, opened my story file, and well, all I could think of was some choice passages in Okay for Now. Like what the heck are the Five Little Peppers doing in there, and sneaking in Jane Eyre's voice like that, and who could resist rereading a sentence like this: "The sky was blue, and a few clouds were easing themselves along like they didn't care."
Okay, so I think I learned my lesson. Or not. That's what a good story should do, right? Make the reader love the story so much that they just have to sneak away from their own lives to live in a different one for a while. So. Back to my own story. Tea is poured, and today I have freshly picked raspberries from my friend's bushes to share with whoever can join me.
