Listening to Rumi
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!

Yes. I'm learning to say yes to all that shows up in my day. Each moment, now and now and now--come in and be welcomed. Come in sorrow and sweetness, be welcomed. The heart softens when opened, here is the pain, here is the bird song, here is the unknown.
This last week, I've finished first drafts of two short stories and am especially pleased with my story The Water of Paradise, a retelling of a Sufi story. Isn't it interesting that when I finally let go of my attachment to the idea that I should continue working on my novel, the small stories just started tumbling out. And who knows what will show up next? I'm listening to Rumi--welcome and entertain them all.
