Anime: Kingdom Hearts 2 (video game)
I love this guy so much! In fact, I think it is safe to say that he is my second favorite male anime character next to L Lawliet. While Kingdom Hearts isn’t actually an anime series, it has a manga and umm… yeah… it’s an animated product of Japan!!! With that aside, Roxas is Sora’s (the main character) Nobody. He was apparently created during the first series when Sora briefly turned into a heartless.
As quoted from the great book of Wikipedia, “Nobodys are creatures without hearts, existing as the body and soul of those that lost their hearts to darkness. As they lack hearts to possess light or darkness, they are "nothing", yet still exist within the Kingdom Hearts universe.” I just thought I’d throw that in there so people who have never played the game don’t get too confused. I’m running too short on time to come up with my own little two sentence description. I’d need a whole damn paragraph… and that’s kind of what this just turned in to; isn’t it? =/
When we first meet Roxas, he appears to be a normal teenager living an average life in a place known as Twilight Town. He has a group of seemingly tight-knit friends and he seems to be well liked amongst the town folk- with the exception of Seifer and his gang. Though it would seem from his surroundings that Roxas leads a pretty contempt life, we see almost right away that something troubles him from deep within. He sort of reminds me of a typical philosopher- pondering the usual deep questions…Why am I here…what’s the meaning of it all… what is it that’s missing from the puzzle…something just feels so… empty. Of course, he doesn’t actually think those things (as far as we know), this just seems to be a first impression of his general personality. I’m going to continue to speculate here- he appears disconnected and unsatisfied with his surroundings. He often falls into states of depression and can’t figure out why.
It’s later through Naminé that he learns he is a Nobody, a creature who isn’t even meant to exist. Can you imagine what effect that would have on a person to learn such a thing? During his time with Organization XIII, we also see that he is filled with unanswered questions and seems filled with doubt about his identity. Because he is a Nobody, he is little more than an empty shell. The thing that’s amazing to me though is the fact that, even though he supposedly has no heart and isn’t supposed to be capable of feeling emotion, Roxas seems to embody very strong emotions from every corner of a human beings psyche.
A new Kingdom Hearts game, “Birth by Sleep”, will hit the shelves of Japan very soon- in fact, I think it’s sometime this month. This will serve as a prequel to the entire Kingdom Hearts series. When I first looked at the cover, I thought one of the main characters was in fact Roxas, but of course that isn’t possible considering he wasn’t created until the middle of the timeline of the first game. Nope, it isn’t him. It’s a new character who goes by the name of Ventus. He apparently has a connection to Sora and Roxas somehow. I’m looking forward to finding out exactly what that connection is. I just hope they don’t try and pull a “Darth Vader” plot and peg Ventus as Sora’s father. That would just seem lame to me. It’s been done in too many stories all ready!!!
So there you have it… CONGRATS TO ROXAS for being my first Anime Character of the month at the beginning of this new decade. You deserve it my friend!!! ^_^
