MoM 29: Well, What Now?

“We need to get out of here, Morgan could be back at any time and who knows what or who he’ll have with him.”

I do agree with Jack but we hardly need to run.

“Sam, what are you fiddling with?”

I roll my eyes at her, “Well I don’t know Romana, what could I probably do in a TARDIS to get us out of here?” At least she has the decency to look sheepish.

“Oh right.” And she leaves Gene’s side to come help me hack the console.

That idiot Morgan actually thought a couple of codes, locks and booby-traps would stop a real Timelord from getting control of his stolen ship. It’s the equivalent of a childproof seal or hinge or bottle.

I’m not sure if they completely underestimated us or if they’re just not capable of anything more complicated. We get the console up and running and Martha comes up to my side, “We’re stealing it?”

I quirk an eyebrow at her, “Have a problem with that?”

She looks around then back at the Doctor, still standing beside Jack. “This could take us home.”

Ah, that. Well, we were going to get back eventually. “We should leave.” I look away and start entering coordinates.

Suddenly this strange, even bubblier version of the Doctor is by my side. “I, ah, I really wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

I give him a questioning look and he smiles back at me nervously. “It really wouldn’t be a good idea.”

I glare at him and feel Martha elbow me in the side. “What?” I ask her.

“You’re scaring him. Be nice.”

I roll my eyes and turn back to him and smile. “Sorry. Been a long day. Why wouldn’t you dematerialise?”

“The bomb under the console.”

My eyes widen and I duck down to look.

Me and the other four people in the room. Sure enough- a bomb rigged into the dematerialisation circuit.

Shit.

Romana, the Doctor and I spend the next half hour or so fiddling with the device and eventually get the bloody thing bypassed even if we couldn’t get it disconnected.

It is good to know that there are elements of the Doctor’s faculties untouched by whatever’s caused his amnesia. Daft bugger doesn’t even answer to his name.

Finally its done which is good because the other three are getting bored.

One thing to remember, never let yourself get stuck with a bored Martha, Jack or Gene but if you get stuck with all three of them you damn well better find them something to do. In this case I sent them exploring, but that didn’t last long after they apparently found something Martha will only describe as, “Ew,” and the other two simply won’t talk about it.

So I am infinitely relieved when we finish and I can get the three troublemakers home- well I’ll still be stuck with two of them and that really wouldn’t be a good idea to try with Gene.

Although the apoplectic colours he would turn if I tried would be amusing.

We arrive back home, parking in the living room of our house. By the time we get outside the TARDIS its already changed shape to fit in with its surroundings- we now have a brand new sofa. As we exit I notice Martha and Jack giving the TARDIS funny looks.

“You know you two look a mite shell-shocked for a wee trip considering you’re both supposed to be old hat at all this alien stuff.” Gene’s smirking at them which is hardly surprising. For the only first timer he’s the only human not gawking like an idiot.

Romana’s giving me a smug look that just screams ‘my lover’s cooler than yours’. I open my mouth to say something, although I’m not sure what when I’m interrupted by the Doctor.

“Do they all do that?” It’s asked so innocently, with that wide smile…

“Eh, well yours doesn’t.”

“I have one? Oh, fabulous! Where is it?” He’s looking at me expectantly but I actually have no idea.

“I guess- it’s where you parked it. Yes, definitely where you left it.”

“Oh,” he looks crestfallen. “I don’t remember where that is.” Suddenly he looks up at me, that damn smile back, beaming from his cheeks, “Will you help me? Help me find it?”

“I…”

“Of course he will.” Great now she’s volunteering me for things- she really is my wife. So why is that making me smile?

“Yes alright, I’ll help. But lets concentrate on getting your memory back, then you’ll just remember where you left it.”

“Right so the missus and I’ll just be off then.”

“Hey, no. I was, we were planning-”

“Sorry Sammy-boy but he seems quite smitten with you and your harem. Wouldn’t want to break them up.”

I look ever to where he’s pointing and see the three of them snuggled on the couch, whispering intensely about something. I turn back to find Gene and Mags have scampered. Guess we’re babysitting.

I sit on the table in front of them and their conversation ends. Rather abruptly and not at all suspiciously.

“Right, so what do you three want to do, until Mags and Gene get back?”

“Dinner?” the Doctor asks.

Which I suppose is fair. I’ve no idea when the last time he ate was and he probably doesn’t either. In fairness he does have amnesia.

Master Sam takes us out to dinner and lets me have anything I want. I wanted noodles and curry but the place we went to said they didn’t do that.

I was a little disappointed but decided I’d just have soup. But he was brilliant! He went into the kitchen and ten minutes later they brought me out noodles and curry and the soup! I wasn’t really hungry enough to eat it all but since he got it for me I did try everything. Jack and Martha got what they wanted too.

Master Sam is really good at taking care of people.

Back at their house he found me some jimjams and when I couldn’t sleep in Jack’s bed- didn’t seem fair to make all of them share for me- agreed we’d all sleep in the big bed. Their bed is massive! Why they need a bed that big I’ll never know.

This morning I saw Master Sam kissing Jack. I realise I wasn’t putting anyone out last night and I feel silly for not getting it.

“They’re both yours?” I ask Master Sam when we go into the TARDIS.

He looks at me funny, “Oh thank Rassilon! I thought you were stuck with the mind of a five year old! I was half dreading you asking me for the Talk.”

“Of course I’m not a five year old. I just… It was a bad day alright, I found out I forgot everything! Forgive me for missing the obvious for one night!”

He smirks, “In answer to your question yes and no you can’t have them.”

That puzzles me and I have to ask, “Why would I want them?” He glares at me. “I didn’t mean- I mean why would I steal them?”

He looks me right in the eye and then he shrugs. “You wouldn’t I guess.”

I frown at him now. “Am I not- would I have before?” I wouldn’t want to be that sort of person.

He laughs, a genuine surprised laugh and I instantly feel better. “No. Omega no! You’re the consummate nice guy.” He quirks an eyebrow at me, giving me a considering look. “Honestly? I stole them from you but I have no intention of ever giving either of them back. Just so you know.”

I shrug. “They’re both happy. You take care of them. Why would I take them back?”

“Because I’m evil.”

I wasn’t really paying all that much attention to the conversation, too busy looking around the TARDIS trying to work out if I knew what everything was. That comment though, about being evil, gets my full attention and I turn to him. He looks worried, like he shouldn’t have said that. He looks even more worried when he sees my smile. “Really? Promise?” He nods obviously confused, “Oh fabulous! I’ve never met a villain before! Well not that I remember anyway. What’s it like?”

He looks completely flabbergasted. I think I’ve upset him until he suddenly shrugs and starts telling me some of his adventures.

Master Sam is so cool and the things he’s done are so exciting. Oh, but when I said that to him he got that funny look on his face again. It takes him a while to say anything and then it’s just to explain that his name isn’t Master Sam, but just the Master or Sam. I said the Master was silly and he laughed and told me to say that again when I remember how we both got our names. Us and some girl called the Rani.

He wouldn’t tell me any more about her so I asked for some more adventures. His life is so exciting.

He assured me that my life’s just as crazy but that doesn’t help when I don’t remember any of it. We talk for ages and don’t get much of anything else done. Not that I realised we were supposed to be doing anything until the others come in and complain we haven’t done it.

The Master just shrugs. He doesn’t care what anyone says about him.

He and Romana are arguing and I sit with Jack, Gene and Martha. I like them, they let me away with anything and Gene’s really funny. Right now they’re complaining this TARDIS is depressing and morbid. It is rather but I think it suits Sam. Still…

I go over to the far wall and remove a panel and start fiddling with some controls. Ah, that one. The room shakes as the TARDIS realigns itself.

“Theta! What did you do?” I look at him sheepishly and then away.

“I ah, reset the console room. But they were complaining!” I point at the other three hoping to shift the blame or at least the attention. The Master and Romana surprise me though by exchanging a look and both smiling broadly at me. They run up to me and each give me a big kiss. “You, Theta, are a genius!”

Then they run out.

“Okay, where did they go?” Martha asks as she and the guys come over to me, all looking wary.

“The console room.” My fingers are on my lips. Are they all gonna keep kissing me?

“I thought this was the console room.” Gene’s gone from wary straight to suspicious.

“One of them. I just chose another one-” Romana and Sam come running back in.

“Right, which one?”

I shrug, “There was lots of wood?”

“Oh I love that one.” Romana smiles brightly at me before running out again.

The Master rolls his eyes and follows her.

“Okay what is going on?”

Jack actually answers her, “I think he redecorated. The Doctor threatened to do it before, but he said he had nowhere left to put the extra offline console room. But more importantly, do you realise Gene is now the only one who hasn’t kissed him?”

Jack smirks at Gene who ignores him and asks me to show him where his wife has run off to. I shrug and show them. At least they seem to like this one better and it does have a more comfy place for us to sit. And a telly apparently. I didn’t know that was there but Martha found it.

Mags and Sam are working already when we get there and tell me just to sit down out of the way.

Spoilsports. I like helping. It’s fun.

I watch telly with the others which is kinda fun because we have to keep explaining things to Gene and he pouts when the amnesiac knows what’s going on better than he does. Who knew Friends was so complicated.

It’s almost an hour later when the Master calls me over. “Theta, what do you think of-”

Martha interrupts him as I bound over. “What do you keep calling him? ‘Cos he’s been answering to it even when he won’t answer to Doctor.”

The Master looks at Martha strangely, which I can understand. I have no idea what’s she’s talking about. “I was calling him- actually…” He’s confused and I think about what he said before I stood up.

“You were calling me Theta.” I tell him helpfully but he just glares at me and I think I might have misunderstood his hesitation.

“Why are you calling him Theta?” She doesn’t seem to realise he wants us to drop this.

“It’s his, was his name. Never mind. Doctor what-”

“No, hold up. His name? How do you know his name?” Now he is just out and out glaring at her, although it is his ‘are you stupid’ glare. He does have a whole range.

“We weren’t born with the as our first names you know! It would be confusing as hell anyway if all the kids had the same name.” That’s a funny idea, but Martha’s not seeing the funny side.

She huffs at him and throws herself back into her seat. He growls and turns back to his work. And the other three continue to ignore the both of them.

I walk over to the console and he glares at me, but shows me what he wanted my opinion on.

Within another hour I think they’ve made a break through. Romana and Sam that is, with whatever was done to me. I’m not sure what it was though because they sent me back to the kiddie corner. Apparently I was going to be disturbed by what had been done to me.

It wasn’t bothering me but I think that was bothering Mags as much as the images themselves.

Eventually them come over to join us. “They’re trying to get knowledge of the Matrix.”

Romana looks at him, angry and worried. “It’s a mad idea. Totally impossible.”

“To retrieve the Matrix from the Mind of someone who has been in it… Actually it could work and we could use the Matrix to restore the Doctor to the point already stored-” I can see his face light up with the idea of the experiment. I might get worried but I trust him.

“Even assuming that’s possible, it would still leave a gap in his memories.” Mags is arguing with him, but I’m not sure she entirely disagrees. Hell I think I agree and I’m the person they’ll be poking and prodding.

“No it’ll all fall into place once he starts to remember.”

Martha‘s looking worried now. “How can you be so sure?” But at least she and the Master aren’t glaring at each other anymore.

“I’ve done it to him before and he recovered just fine.” Oh. Should that worry me?

“I thought you said you two went to school together?” Well that’s nice, Gene’s worried about me. I think I like him because I don’t have a history I don’t even know with him.

“Yeah, we were inseparable- best friends ever since.” Oh, well that’s reassuring I guess. The Master and I are best friends. Actually seeing how weird his wife and boyfriend are with him I can see him doing that memory thing to his best friend.

“Actually I can see you doing that to a friend.” See Gene agrees with me.

There’s a moment when everyone just thinks about it. Then Romana gets back to the point.

“But you’d still need the Matrix and we can’t risk trying to get it from you if you’ll just end up like the Doctor.” I don’t want to put Sam in any danger- I don’t mind not remembering.

Then again he’s smirking at her so he must have a good idea. “No. But it is potentially somewhere else-”

Okay so the smirk’s worrying Mags. “Not in my head!”

“No. In Adric’s mind.”

“Adric? Whatever happened to him?” Who’s Adric? I look at the other three but they seem just as confused now as me.

“The Doctor let him get blown up, eradicating the dinosaurs.” I what?

Right now I feel like Gene watching 90’s TV. Confused and disturbed and unable to look away.

The Master has an idea, we have to get a girl and then get a boy and then get my mind back. At least that’s how Gene rephrased it for him. Of course he also added a comment about the Master’s harem.

This Adric knows the Matrix, which apparently my mind is in. This Tegan girl knows where he last was- something about exact space temporal coordinates. And after we do all that we get to find my TARDIS.

That’s the only step I really care about. I really want to know which console room I like- dark and gloomy or bright and perky or maybe something in between.

I had to say goodbye to my new friends. Well, one new friend and two old friends I just can’t currently remember. Martha and the Master are going back to the future and I’m supposed to go with them.

Romana says because that’s where I can get my memories back. Gene said it was because he refuses to baby-sit. I don’t take it personally- I have noticed that they’re all very horrible ot each other but that doesn’t mean they don’t like each other.

We all said goodbye to Jack first and then Sam took away his memories. I ask why and he told me that he’d give them back again, when we meet Jack in the future, the Master promises we will. The Master never promises anything he doesn’t mean so I believe him.

I did ask why he couldn’t just do the mind thing for me. He laughed, “Theta, Jack’s difficult enough, his mind is trained to resist control and his freak-ness makes it even more complicated to navigate. You, you have a multitude of natural and trained defences, several layers of damage and a very high probability of an instinctive urge to throw me out of your mind.”

“So no then?”

“No.”

I watched Sam and Martha say goodbye to Mags and Gene first. The girls both cried and the Master let Mags hug him and kiss his cheek. Of course it was hilarious to watch Sam and Gene take the mickey out of the girls’ goodbye when they said their own. There were fake tears and shouts and hugs and it was just so ludicrous it was downright hilarious.

Even the girls laughed.

Then I said my goodbyes. Mags first, with a kiss. Jack kissed me too in his goodbye. She says they’ll see us in the future as well and then I turn to Gene. I apologise, again, for kissing his wife, again but he just shrugs and says it’s hardly my fault she keeps mauling me. We smile and I go to reply but Sam interrupts with a demand that I get a move on.

I shrug, take deep breath and grab Gene. I manage to give him a whopper of a kiss.

Then I run into the TARDIS.

I can hear him spluttering and the other three laughing as I hide behind the door.

Martha and Sam come into the TARDIS, still smiling and calling out their goodbyes before closing the door.

“Jack will be pissed he missed that.” Sam’s still amused and I guess he is right.

But Jack’s not who I’m worried about, “Is Gene very angry?” I ask nervously.

“No. He was laughing when we left.” I smile at that. Thank you Martha. I’m sure Sam would have kept me hanging. I’m really glad.

I would really hate to have Gene mad at me but I was just curious.
