Mesa Vista - My BaCC for fun: Week 5-17 Planter

Mar 26, 2016 18:21

Now I'm really caught up with my playing...

Welcome back to the Mesa Vista Week 5 Update Marathon!
The debut of Vern Planter's household here had been sitting almost finished in St. Hubert, Mesa Vista's new(ish) rural/farming district, for well over two years, even longer than the Wing family seen in the previous update.

They say there was a sucker born every minute, and Vern Planter with his three Magic Bullets and Total Home Gym?
"Wait... this is the farm I bought sight-unseen advertised in the newspaper back home?"
Yeah. One of them.

"Crap, what have I gotten myself into?"
That would be a Harvest Moon Challenge written by Alijah, nestled in a Farming Challenge thread at MTS.

Grill, baby, grill!

Vern is another random Sim I made in CAS. His stats: Libra 2/8/2/6/7, Popularity, LTW Captain Hero. A great LTW! And absolutely useless here.
*gulp*

"I see you're one of those households."
"What do you mean, 'those'?"
"It's sure not a desk job, is it? Still, there are worse ways to raise a family."
"Family?"
"Yeah. Don't you want a family some day?"
Kaylynn Spitzig stayed talking to Vern well into the night...

Hmm, desk job, desk job...
"I don't care what the ad said, this dirt living isn't all it's cracked up to be. Let's see if St. Hubert has any jobs..."
No jobs allowed, only living off the land.

Yup, Vern found himself squarely planted in yet another hardship challenge. I started this not long after the Broken and Homeless challenges, only to find I was becoming rather weary of them.

Forging ahead! Thirty plants took a lot work.

And I had learned playing the Landlubber Challenge eons ago, that fishing from the get-go was the best way to fend off starvation when winter invevitably hit in these challenges.

My first time not placing lady bug houses around my gardens. There was something about spraying pesticide on plants I would later be eating from that screamed "Hell, no!"

Vern was happy that Kaylynn frequently stopped by his lot.

Argh, so many bugs.

We knew what was coming, right?

"My... my... what's with my hair?"

Vern had no time for no stinking hair - he had a boatload of tomatoes to tend to!

"Wow, you guys believe everything I tell you, don't you?"
Tomatoes: *preen*

It took forfricking ever for Vern to talk each of the later plants into a mouthwatering state.

"Yum yum, come on, girls!"
Tomatoes: *blush*
Vern finally finished his first harvest!

And early Monday morning, playing the piano Kaylynn dropped off after a dream date, was how I had originally ended Vern Planter's first week in St. Hubert.
(Material rewards can be used but not sold. I have no idea what I did with Humble's computer, but I think and hope I deleted it unopened since I was in challenge mode at the time.)

After the Wing update, I decided to bite the bullet and get the pics together for whatever update I could cobble together for Vern.
That was when I discovered that another reason I lost interest here besides too many hardship challenges clumped together, was that with the default replacement Plantsim skin (I'm not wild about the Maxis version's vines), Vern didn't look much like Vern anymore. I went through my downloads folder and deleted said default replacement.

Well, he still didn't look much like Vern, but for some reason, I liked this one better, vines and all.
It was still Monday morning on the lot, and I decided to take a page from simlili's book and find a house I liked, to build as I play the family, instead of the trial and error, mostly error, method of building something from scratch.

This was it! Nabe Project: The Sun House by ShuuNeko, designed for a "multi-cultural household" that I had downloaded ages ago. I expect I would have chosen it even if Vern hadn't been a Plantsim.

Now I had a purpose and was excited to get started building! Lol, the 3 bullet blenders and total gym I'd bought to mimic Alijah's flavor text were still there and would be set to good use. Also, apparently ten tomatoes per plant - I might actually get a good start on his new home!

The blenders and exercise equipment sold for about §1800. Moutherwatering tomatoes went for §17 each, healthy ones §12 and bland ones, either §6 or 8, can't remember.
I'm disappointed I didn't get a pic of the total tally, but Vern ended up with over §5000 to work with.

Greenhouse walls made an expensive house, but well worth it for the coolness factor.
Vern was considering asking Kaylynn to move in, but first checked his food supply to see if it would be viable, since only food raised from the lot was allowed after the fridge became empty. There was still §141 left in the fridge, but with winter now upon him and greenhouse walls purportedly no protection from the cold, he decided it would be best to wait.

Neither digging nor Plantsimism were expressly against the rules, but both were mentioned as being an advantage. In this case, digging was only to pay an §800 shortfall in taxes. As for the Plantsimism, Vern became a Plantsim before I read it in the thread, and I'm not as concerned with the hardship aspect as much as building a farm solely from what is produced on the lot.

Vern threw his initial caution to the wind when Kaylynn strolled by his lot - again! If I didn't know better, I would think she's interested...

Vern couldn't resist asking if she liked what she now saw.

"Good plumbbob, no! X X X"

"But congratulations, your Plantsimness is pretty cool. I guess." *linger*

Oh, okay, what the hey!

Kaylynn brought §5000 with her and became Mesa Vista's next ex Drive-Thru Clerk.

And again, heck, why not?
But... that's it?
Fun fact about Kaylynn's gift of the piano: the original Sun House is furnished with the same one. Like it was meant to be.
Kaylynn: *plunks keys nonchalantly*

Say hello to Chrysann and her very sharply-chiseled cheeks!

She's cute though :)

Keeping warm was the main concern for the next few days, but only for Chrysann.
I looked up the AL radiator to see if it would warm a room or if you had to click it to get warm, and couldn't really find an answer.
Btw, has anyone had this happen with the Shoddy Fireplace?

Is it a bug like the Dreamcatcher was?

Anyway, a tiny bathroom was completely enclosed and covered, and since splashing in the toilet took care of Chrysann's need for water, we'll see next time if that will be sufficient for her.

I laid the floor tiles according to the original footprint of the house, but since the lot is huge and Kaylynn wants to marry off six children, the house will most likely be expanded on quite a bit.

Vern also caught two fish before the pond was expected to freeze over, so they in addition to the remaining contents in the fridge should be enough for Kaylynn.

A last-minute purchase of a radiator they can't really afford. No definitive results to report yet as Kaylynn and Vern found other ways to keep warm...

That does it for the Planter household this week! I am so glad that I now look forward to playing them again, not only to work on building the house and eventually other buildings, but see what Kaylynn will do for money: pottery, writing, painting, sewing, flowers..? :D
