Highlander Fanfiction Rec-List

Jun 05, 2010 23:45

I was planning to do this for quite some time now and worked on that list ever since. It was also the perfect excuse for re-reading the stories every time I needed a break from university or work! :P There's another reason: easy access. My recent computer problems (I had to completely wipe out my harddrive and re-install everything bit by bit) showed that I may need another place to save that list - in case that the next time I'll lose even more of my bookmarks or won't be able to save the data on my harddrive again (and I'm not really great on keeping up to date backups even if I'm trying).

This (is) will be a rec list of my favourite Highlander stories. As I'm a Methos fangirl he'll be the main focus in most of the stories and as I'm a huge hurt/comfort fan there won't be a lot of nice times for the old guy. Sorry. *hides* Also a lot of them will be slash with mostly Duncan/Methos (my OTP in this fandom ^^). There will be no particular order of the stories, no ranking - just a collection sorted after authors. I'll try to add some personal notes like I've seen on other rec lists as I found that usually more helpful than just links.

Unfortunately just because I liked the stories there's no guarantee you'll like them too. But I hope at least some of you will enjoy reading the stories just as much as I have. :D Heed the authors warnings for things you don't like to read! And don't give up looking elsewhere! There are a lot of other good authors and stories out there in the Highlander fandom. They probably just weren't exactly my cup of tea. :) But if anyone wants to make some suggestions I'm all open.

The list won't be complete anytime soon as I still have a big 'to read'-folder and also may have to re-read some other fics, but I'll try to update every now and then. Also there might be some recs with currently not (or no longer) working links. If anyone could help with alternative links I would be really grateful! Thanks!

That said... Enjoy! ^_^

Fanzines: Futures Without End (II, III & IV)

- Internment, ~ 18.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  Kidnapped and isolated, Methos survives.

- It's the Journey, ~ 15.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  A New Path, ~ 5.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  Methos takes a rough quickening and goes trekking with MacLeod acompanying him.

- Searching for Perfection in an Imperfect World, ~ 10.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult, bit of non-con)
  Joe and MacLeod visit Methos on Vancouver Island.

- Pilgrim, ~ 22.500 words (J/M Slash, Mature Content)
  Just when you think you know someone.

Methos prepares to leave and asks Joe to come with him. Somehow I had more problems with reading fics with a Joe/Methos pairing than with Methos/OMC. I don't know why but I didn't seem to be able to imagine that could be working, so it took some time until I finally tried to read a J/M story. Luckily, this one, which I - to my own surprise - liked a lot. Possibly because of the great characterisation of Joe (and Methos too).

- What the Heart Sees, ~ 19.000 words (D/M Slash, Mature Content, mentions of past non-con)
  Methos flees after being badly injured and Duncan goes to find out what happened to him. But will Methos allow the Highlander to help him in his time of need?

Really not the best writing style and her Duncan is a bit off for me but every time I'm in need for some blatant Methos worship I return to her stories. Especially as there's always quite a bit h/c for the old man in it and as I said I'm a sucker for that (I gave up being ashamed of that a long time ago)! :P

- Doctor's Order, ~ 34.500 words (D/M Slash, Mature Content, Explicit Violence)
  Dr. Anne meets Methos under unpleasant circumstances and things get even worse.

One of her better ones. Methos comes to Seacouver to decide what to do with the Watchers and his Adam Pierson persona but runs into some trouble instead. Even if his difficulties with assimilating Quickenings are a fairly common idea in the fandom I really like her explanation for Death and the Horsemen. As I said I come here for Methos worship! ;)

- Gone Arc, ~ 14.500 words (D/M Slash, Mature Content)

A breakup and its fallout - until Duncan and Methos meet again, years later. Love the heartache, makes me want to hug both the boys. *sniff*

- I'm Not Ethan, ~ 14.500 words (D/M Slash, M/OMC, Mature Content, non-con)
  AU in the future. Methos is kidnapped and made into the perfect bodyguard.

MacLeod is the usual boy scout whilst Methos wants to sit it out. I liked the idea that this time Methos has to pay for Duncan's actions which don't even bring that much in the end.

- Moving On, ~ 11.000 words (D/M Slash, M/OMC, Mature Content)
  A tough Quickening, too much Scotch, and Mac reaches out for Methos to ease his needs. A tough morning after and Methos moves on and away from Seacouver and into the arms of another.

Nice reading, even if I don't really think Duncan would be that uptight. I just need the angst and heartache sometimes.

- No Man Is An Island, ~ 25.000 words (D/M slash, Mature Content)
  A heart broken Methos is running away when he’s stranded on a deserted island with his Watcher Amy Thomas among others.

Again, I don't think MacLeod would behave that way, but hey ... Methos marooned on an island and able to show off his 5000 years of life experience ... Loved it! :D

- Paid In Full Series

* Paid In Full, ~ 59.000 words (D/M Slash, M/OMC, Mature Content, Explicit Violence, non-con)
       Methos plays Boy Scout and look where it gets him! At least it lets him pay back a debt in full.
     * Once I Lived in Thrace, ~ 11.500 words (D/M Slash, M/OMC, Mature Content, Explicit Violence, non-con)
       Methos remembers back to when he met evil Immortal Maximus Cassius for the first time.
     * Treasure Hunt, ~ 21.500 words (D/M Slash, Mature Content, Explicit Violence)
       Adam Pierson and Dr. Amy Zoll are kidnapped to translate a manuscript that leads to a hidden treasure.

My favourite of her stories. Methos the hero who is sacrificing himself for others and even reaches some closure with Cassandra. What can I ask more for?! ;) Maybe for a not quite that narrow-minded Scot (gets a lot better at the end of the story) and an OC who isn't so much of a male Mary Sue version. :P Liked it nevertheless, especially the first part.

Uh ... how to say it ... her stories are a bit hard to read. Not just because of the physical aspects (lots of hurt, blood, violence) but because there's also a lot of psycological angst. That's sometimes really hard to read and often leaves my insides tied in a knot. O.O But that's why I like to read her too sometimes, because of the intensive emotions she can rouse with her writings (the good and the bad).

- Into Each Life, ~ 8.000 words (Pre-Slash, Explicit Violence)
  Methos finds out there's no more room inside of him than anyone.

Immortals are searching for Methos and as if that wasn't bad enough Cassandra's back in town too. Well written but oh so hurtful little piece.

- The Hand, The Book & The Storm Series

Three more or less loosely connected story arcs. It made it on the list actually just because of the second arc, The Book Series. Duncan and Methos trying to work through the hardship of sharing a life with their clashing personalities in the mix is really believable written. One of the pieces I like to re-read when I'm in the mood for a lot of heartache. The other two arcs are a bit on the violent side, especially The Storm Series.

The Hand Series, ~ 35.000 words (D/M Slash, M/OMC, NC-17, Explicit Violence, non-con)
     * 1: Forcing the Hand
     * 2: Giving the Hand Away
     * 3: Biting the Hand That Feeds
     * 4: The Claws That Catch
     * 5: The Jaws That Bite
     * 6: Vorpal Sword in Hand
     * 7: Epilogue: Surviving the Jabberwocky

How Duncan and Methos get together. And no, they don't just fall into bed ... let's just say Amanda isn't thrilled about the news and add to that another bad immortal from Methos' past ... a lot of troubles ahead!

The Book Series, ~ 29.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
     * 1: Garden and the Forbidden Fruit
     * 2: Sword At the Gate
     * 3: Paradise Renegotiated
     * 4: Epilogue: After Gardening

The hardship of everyday life. It isn't easy for two so different peronalities, but they are trying ... somehow. Amanda gets to be the negotiater this time.

The Storm Series, ~ 32.000 words (D/M Slash, M/OMC, M/OFC, NC-17, Explicit Violence, Torture, non-con)
     * 1: The Calm Before the Storm
     * 2: Down Came the Rains
     * 3: Darkest Before Dawn
     * 4: Storm Damage

Methos gets kidnapped by an insane couple and remembers some of his not so nice past. I suggest you really heed the warnings on this parts!!

- Prometheus Bound, ~ 9.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  Without a Sound, ~ 3.000 words (D/M Slash)

Ouch, ouch, ouch ... lots of Methos angst. First part during "Modern Prometheus", second part after the Ahriman arc.

  • C.E. Murphy
- Immortal Beloved, ~ 96.500 words (M/OFC Het, PG/PG-13)
  An archaeologist's claim to have found Atlantis brings five thousand years of memories and missed chances back to Methos' doorstep.

Like the connection between Immortals and the legend of Atlantis in this one - and the implication that Methos may be way older. And even if I don't really like Methos' wife (her mother is a much more interesting character! ;) the background story and the OC's are well thought of.

- Nothing But the Truth, ~ 3.100 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  A simple case of mistaken identity.

Methos under the influence of a truth serum. It's funny and hot as hell - but at the same time with an unexpected serious undertone.

- Ol' Green Eyes Is Back, ~ 3.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  Methos has been around the block a few times. Duncan is visited by the green-eyed monster.

- Too Much Monkey Business, ~ 4.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  Duncan's acting like he's been hit with alien sex pollen or something. He hasn't been, but he sure is acting like it.

Duncan can't seem to get enough ... it's just too much for Methos who goes to Joe for some refugee - and drinking. Really funny! *lol*

  • Cassidy
- Mi Casa Es Su Casa, ~ 44.500 words (D/M Slash, PG-15)
  This is the story of Methos home and his desperate attempt to get MacLeod to join him there.

- Two Heroes in the Night, ~ 13.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  First Time Story. Methos and Duncan both mourn for lost lovers, but not for long.

- As All Light Fades part 1, part 2, ~ 17.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, non-con)

Cassandra takes her revenge. When Duncan is finally able to find and free Methos the old man is dying. The author gives no warning but the beginning is really not nice! The rest is quite sappy though.

- The Restoration Series, ~ 93.500 words (Gen, maybe PG-13ish)

* Called To Rise
     * Twilight Of The Dawn
     * Boats Against The Current
     * Memory Rut
     * What Lies Within
     * Becoming
          o Wizard, Warrior, Watcher, Witch
          o It's A Mage, Mage, Mage, Mage, Mage, Mage World
          o Armageddon--Not Just A War But An Adventure
          o That's My Story, And I'm Sticking To It

Another Methos worshipper. Nothing wrong with that and there are some interesting theories about Methos' early years in it. I also quite liked the writing style which made for enjoyable reading and I was captured right from the beginning up to the end. But ... I never thought I would say that ... but sometimes Methos seemed to be a bit too perfect, to be able to do too much. If that was an OFC I would shout 'Mary Sue'!! *shrugs* Will be re-reading the series every now and then nevertheless. :P

  • Dae
- The Search For Connor, ~ 23.500 words (D/M Pre-Slash, PG-15)

An AU after "Forgive Us Our Trespasses" and especially to 'Highlander: Endgame'. Every story where Connor gets to live is worth reading! *g* Even if Duncan and Methos don't quite get together in the end. At least the promise of more is there.

One of my favourite Methos worshippers! Everyone who thinks Methos should be the One gets a lot of additional points in my book, add to that great writing and emotional stories and I'm completely happy! ^^ The links on her site weren't working for a time as some idiot thought it a good idea to hack the website. Most (unfortunately not all) of the stories can be now found on FF.net and her LJ too.

- By the Rivers of Babylon, ~ 13.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, non-con)
  A "What If" story. Not intended as a Tessa bash, but I'm sure someone will think so. What if Tessa isn't happy about Duncan's new lover?

- Dark Places and Fair, ~ 27.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  Mac, Methos, and Marriage.

Funny story with just a bit of angst inbetween. First Duncan tries to get Methos to marry him, but the old man hesitates and when he finally agrees, Duncan isn't that sure anymore. Love that conversation between Joe and Methos which gives a few insights into the old man. And the scenes between Connor and 'Adam' are also great, when the older MacLeod doubts the motives of the strange immortal and just tries to keep his cousin safe. *lol*

- Hellos, Goodbyes and Other Assorted Sentiments, ~ 3.000 words (D/M Slash, maybe PG/PG-13)

Future fic. Methos visits Joe's grave and speaks about his relationship with Duncan, tells him about his doubts and fears. "Has forever ended?" as the author summs it up so nicely.

- The Mottled King, ~ 14.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Violence)
  "In other words," Joe said, "sometimes when you think the universe is out to get you, it really is."

Just when Duncan and Methos think live is finally good the fates decide to change that. Poor Methos, gets quite a bit hurt but also some comfort.

- Save the Last Dance, ~ 28.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  It started as a game and ended as love.

I think that's her best story - for the beginning alone: Duncan comes home and finds Methos on his couch, watching a soap opera, with dinner almost ready and there are even biscuits in the oven. *lol* But it's also very well written and the development of their relationship into something more really believable. Again there are some great scenes for Joe - you just have to love his fatherly feelings for Adam! :D

- Tessellation, ~ 22.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)

Joe comes with news of Duncan's death (really heartbreaking) and Methos goes to find out what happend - and to recover Mac's Quickening. Offers some new aspects for Methos' past. (uh ... no Character Death)

Her favourite pastime seems to be writing crossovers. I may add one or two more to the list after I had time to re-read them.

- The Book of Enoch, ~ 15.000 words (Slash, but blink and you won't see it)
  Death comes knocking.

A Highlander/Supernatural crossover. Written as a script, which would normally turn me away from the fic very fast. Luckily I started reading nevertheless and was rewarded with an interesting plot, lots of humor and some great theories! I really hope she'll write the sequel mentioned in the comments.

- Kiss of Shadows, ~ 166.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Violence) - Prequel: Kiss the Steel
  In Africa, Duncan and Methos meet once more and soon both their lives are in danger. Can they escape Angola through two opposing armies, solve the mystery, defeat the bad guys and stay alive?

Wow, just wow! This is such a complex and well written story! A pleasure to read! There's actually a prequel (can stand alone), which I don't like that much. Not because it's bad or so, just an irrational emotional reaction to MacLeod leaving Methos at the end (and because she's killing Joe in that story O.O). :P And there are defenitely quite a few more stories of that author in my 'to read'-folder.

- Wotan's Day, ~ 61.500 words (Krycek/Methos Slash, NC-17, Violence)
  The year is 2023. Methos, the oldest of the Immortals in Highlander, has been living as a corporate lawyer in Denver. Alexander Krycek, the double-dealing ratboy of the X-Files, has been living there as an art dealer, running a gallery in Aurora, Colorado. They are lovers, but they each know nothing about the other's past. All Hell is about to break loose.

Astonishing how many people presume they would be able to outsmart Methos. *g* An interesting Highlander/X-Files crossover with a lot of twists and turns with quite a bit of dark humour. Almost nothing is as it seems to be. I wasn't that sure in the beginning it would really be working, but the story grew on me with every chapter until I finally couldn't stop reading anymore.

- Methos' Secrets, ~ 500 words (gen, All Audiences)
  Some people collect stamps, Methos collects secrets.

- Avoidance Srategies, ~ 18.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, discussion of past non-con)
  After years of dancing around each other, the boys finally make it into each other's arms, and it was more than worth the wait--at least, it was from Duncan's point of view. But then Methos stopped coming to bed at night...

- New Tricks, ~ 38.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  When Methos ducks into a Seacouver SPCA in order to avoid the latest Immortal nutcase, he ends up adopting a homeless dog who reminds him a little too strongly of his past. Will Duncan be able to help him out?

Aww... this one's so sweet you just keep sticking to it (and that even with me being a cat-person). :P

- The Manuscript, ~ 13.000 words (Genish, PG)
  Amanda needs help. Methos meets a new friend. And MacLeod comes to the rescue. Highlander/Dresden Files crossover

- Missed Connections, ~ 29.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence)
  It happened in the sunshine of the late afternoon, as he walked down a quiet street on the left bank. She came charging from around a corner following the signal of her presence by only a second or two. He had just enough warning to draw his sword and block her downward strike.

- Sastrugi, ~ 16.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  On the eve of Duncan selling his Seacouver loft, Methos shows up with an unusual job offer. Together they embark on a rare adventure that tests even their Immortal limits.

- Chance for a Change, ~ 45.000 words (Gen, PG-13)
  Duncan, Methos, and other immortals have a mission. Their goal is simple: peace and truth. The cost, however, may be countless lives, friendships, and one immortal's sanity.

- Lucifer Rising, ~ 67.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, non-con)
  A follow-up to COMES A HORSEMAN and REVELATIONS 6:8. Duncan must deal with both his anger and his love for Methos - and the deadly influence of Kronos' personality, which he has absorbed through the Quickening.

Her website is down at the moment, but it still says that it shall be back soon. Hopefully, cause even if quite a few of her stories can be found on 7th-dimension that list isn't nearly complete. And as I really like her writings I love to go back to re-read her stories.

EDIT: After almost a year I think it's safe to say that the site will not come back online soon (if ever). So as far as I know 7th-dimension is the only archive hosting this authors works.

- The Art of War, ~ 5.500 words (D/M Slash, PG)

Methos remebers back to his time in Ancient China.

- Still-Heart, ~ 65.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Violence)

Incredibly good story! It has everything you could wish of a story: good writing, a well thought of plot, Methos mortal years, Duncan and Methos finally getting together and Joe is there too. Definitely one of my favourite stories!

- White Horses [Part 1, Part 2], ~ 7.500 + 24.000 words (D/M Slash, PG + NC-17)

Heartbreaking. Hurts to read, especially the first part. Methos doubts his relationship with Duncan. And if that wasn't enough he gets to know first hand why you shouldn't take a head on Holy Ground. The second part is a bit mystical but also nicely written and a direct continuation from part one. I hope that the link for part 2 will work again soon.

- Sacred Trust, ~ 129.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Violence, Torture)

Something else from Methos' past comes back, but it's also a big part of the Watchers history. - Found that story only recently. Would have been a loss if I hadn't, cause it's another well written story full of interesting OC's and with a complex plot. And "Joe Dawson's Nannies to go" are just too good! *lol*

- Tantalus, ~ 17.500 words (Pre-Slash, PG-13)
  What if escaping is the easy part?

This is totally a whump story. Lots of hurt/comfort for the old guy. As the author said: "There's a real element of challenge in plausibly damaging an Immortal. I hope I rose to the occasion." I think she did well!

  • Liz Bradford
- Epiphany, ~ 14.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  It is a fine line between Love and Hate.

- Immortal Nightmare, 23.000 eords (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence)

Cassandra's Revenge.

- The Blind Side of the Heart and the Wrong Side of the Door, 7.500 words (D/M implied, PG-13)
  A Duncan/Methos angst-fest. Just how good is Methos with a sword, what would it take to find out and how welcome would that knowledge be?

Great study.

- Gather, ~ 15.000 words (D/M Slash, R)

It's the time of the Gathering and look at what the prize is. I like stories where Methos gets to survive - but I like stories where he isn't the only one even more! No jewel, but a nice enough idea.

Unfortunately her website seems to be down permanentely. I think I found most of the stories I liked again, but I can't be sure there weren't more I hadn't read yet. And there definitely was a story about Methos' mortal years (even if still a WIP) I hadn't finished reading that I can't find anymore.

With great thanks to uberfrosch  I can now present a page with Maygra's complete works (the link goes to her warnings page, just scroll down to go further). Go and look through them! It's worth all the time you may spend there, captured by her stories and unable to stop reading.

- Edge of Darkness, ~ 23.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Explicit Violence, non-con) co-written with Meghan Black

AU during the Horsemen episodes. One of the few I couldn't find a working link for yet. Sorry. Thanks to starsunwanted  now with a working link.

- A Heart for Any Fate, ~ 14.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  A First Time story that takes place after 'The Modern Prometheus'.

- Private Dancing, ~ 7.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  A night out - good food, good music, all the right moves.

HOT! It could almost be called a PWP ... almost. *g*

- The Ragged Edge, ~ 12.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence) co-written with MacGeorge
  Duncan takes a bad Quickening and Methos is there to... well that's what the story is about.
  Standing on the Edge of Never, ~ 61.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence) co-written with MacGeorge
  MacLeod and Methos struggle to come to terms with the tempestuous impact of Quickening energies that are driving them to violence towards each other.

- The Shield Brothers Arc
  Duncan's and Methos' growing realationship starting after "Revelations 6:8".

* 1: Brotherhood, ~ 10.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence, non-con)
      Mac & Methos try to salvage their friendship and find much more than forgiveness.
    * 2: Harm's Way, ~ 10.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence, mentions of non-con)
    * 3: Soulsword, ~ 3.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
      Once there was a good man named Tiernan . . . who may have seen more for Mac and Methos than they can see for themselves.
    * 4: With My Shield, ~ 27.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence, mentions of non-con)
      Methos discovers that sacrificing your life sometimes isn't enough.
    * 5: Walk in the Park, ~ 4.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
      Memory lane becomes lover's lane when the boys take a much needed day off!
    * 6: Reading Between the Lines, ~ 22.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
      Methos works to reconcile MacLeod and Richie and opens the door for Cassandra's vengeance.
    * 7: Crosses to Bear, 40.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence, Torture, non-con)
      An old enemy of Methos teaches Mac that our worst fears are often within ourselves.
    * Found two more parts. 8: Storm Front and 9: This Sword Unbroken
Never could bring myself to really read those two (just skipped over some parts) because of major character death. And even if she kind of repairs that in the end ... it isn't quite the same. And no, being well written is no viable argument here.

- Stone Soup, ~ 10.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  Duncan and Methos share a meal.

Bittersweet little piece. With a quiet pace, not much is happening, but still so full of emotion.

- Swords At Sunset, ~ 43.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17) co-written with Ashlyn Donnchaid

Their entry for the "Swords at Sunset"-Contest. AU with Duncan as the chieftains son who falls in love with a commoner. So sappy, a lot of heartache before the happy end.

- Hunted, ~ 13.500 words (D/M Slash, Mature Content, Explicit Violence)
  Methos is being hunted and is having some adverse reactions to the many quickenings. And he doesn't want MacLeod to know.

Some really great scenes between Joe and Methos.

  • Nettie
- Two Mules For Methos, ~ 42.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Violence)

Also written for the "Swords at Sunset"-Contest, but never postet as an entry. AU. This is so, so funny! Methos' and Duncan's first meeting had me laughing out loud! The stubbornness of both ... *g* But before the happy end there are some hardships and bad guys to overcome.

- Lost, ~ 20.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  Methos ends up a long way from home. Highlander/Queer as Folk.

  • Polly Bywater
- The Final Tally, ~ 7.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult)
  Duncan realizes what's missing in his life; or rather, who.

Just a nice little First Time story.

- Seeing It Through, ~ 13.000 words (gen, T, mentions of torture)
  When Methos is blinded by another Immortal, Connor and Joe try to convince him that he can still survive.

- Revenant, ~ 70.500 words (D/M Slash, D/OFC, Adult) co-written with MacGeorge
  When Watcher Clare Winge discovers Immortal Benny Carbasa in an asylum near Paris, she goes to Adam Pierson for help.

- The Quality of Mercy Series (D/M Slash, NC-17, Explicit Violence, mentions of past child abuse)

This is easily under the top 3 of my favourite stories, right beside two of Tessa Rae's! I absolutely adore her writing style and love her characterisations of Methos, Duncan and Joe. I've read especially the first part again and again (had to stop/chose only parts or spend even more nights reading instead of sleeping) and every single time it felt as if my heart was torn out - again and again. You just have to feel with Methos and at the end you are as exhausted as him. It doesn't matter that there's hope (or even more at the end of the last part) the way up to that point is almost too much to bear. I just love such stories which are able to capture me so completely.

* The Quality of Mercy, ~ 38.500 words
      Duncan and Methos attempt to work out their differences after Byron's death.
    * Drawing the Line, ~ 16.500 words
      Duncan attempts to learn more about his new lover and fit this new relationship into his life.
    * For What It Is, ~ 23.000 words
      Can Duncan and Methos' love weather the return of Amanda?
    * Courts of Honor, ~ 31.000 words
      An old victim of Methos' Horsemen days seeks his revenge upon the man known as Death.
    * Aftermath, ~ 12.500 words
      Duncan and Methos come to terms with the events of "Courts of Honor".
    * The Envy of Angels, ~ 20.500 words
      Duncan and Methos' first Valentine's Day together brings some surprises.
    * Redemption's Price, 99.000 words
      Duncan and Methos receive help from unexpected sources.

- Go Down Into Night, ~ 8.000 words (Genish, R, Violance, Adult Concepts)
  Post-Double Quickening fic, from the Methos POV

- Tempting Fate, ~ 13.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  A first time story, a psychological comedy, a bedroom farce--with beer and just a touch of deus ex machina for flavor.

Took a bit getting used to because of all the thoughts and downright discussions inside of Duncan's and Methos' heads - but it was well worth it!

This author has a very special way with words. It's a pleasure to read her works and I'm sure I'll add a couple of more fics later - after re-reading.

- Conjugal Visits, ~ 16.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  Even if Duncan left this minute, just stood up and walked over the south pass, he'd never make it to a decent campsite by nightfall...

Hurts, hurts, hurts ... So much anger, so much hurt ... Duncan and Methos in the future, due to circumstances only able to meet once a year.

- The Better Part of Valor, ~ 5.700 words (gen, All Audiences)
  Set during 'Indiscretions'. How do you smuggle your annoying immortal friend past the police and safely home when he insists on singing karaoke along the way?

Such a beautiful piece from Joe's POV.

Another author who can capture me from the first to the last line. Quite a few of her stories kept me from sleeping as I just couldn't stop reading until I had finished them. Her stories are complex with great plots, well written and on spot characterisation ... and so long! ^^ Not all of her stories are archived at "Highlander Fiction". The only complete list is on her Livejournal but mostly friends locked. Just ask and she'll probably friend you back.

- The Decent Into Madness, ~ 233.000 words (D/M Slash, D/Tessa, Adam/Gillian, NC-17, Violence) co-written with slcross
  Duncan starts seeing Watchers everywhere and seeks out Joe Dawson to complain - and meets Adam Pierson; Watcher and grad student. Then Immortals go missing and beheaded bodies turn up; making Duncan the prime suspect in an FBI investigation.

AU. To be honest I have some problems with the beginning of the story. For me it just feels a bit too fast how Duncan and Methos go from mourning their dead lovers to pining after each other. That the story still makes it on my top three list should say enough about the quality of the rest, shouldn't it?! ;) Intensive, with a lot of tensions, assumptions and accusations between Duncan and Methos. This time Don Salzer gets to be the fatherly friend, which leads to one of my favourite scenes: when Joe and Don surprise Duncan and Methos in bed. *g*

- Dreams, Visions, Signs & Portents + Inanna, ~ 169.000 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence, non-con)
Amanda steals an old goblet as a present for Duncan. The theft sets in motion a chain of events that rekindles dangerous, old memories for Methos, and awakens another ancient enemy.

- Heaven and Hell, ~ 71.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence)
  After his confrontation with Methos about the Horsemen, Duncan does not walk away, instead he asks a different question.

- On Faith and Trust Alone, ~ 113.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Violence) co-written with sethra2000

Crossover with 'The Professionals'. And as I've never seen an episode of that series I can confirm you can enjoy the story and the Highlander part nevertheless. AU, Duncan and Methos meet about 15 years before 'Highlander. The Series'.

- Scottish Trails, ~ 34.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)
  2 years after O'Rourke Duncan and Methos finally meet in London and establish their friendship.

- So Comes A Reckoning, ~ 312.500 words (D/M Slash, Adult, Explicit Violence)
  Duncan has defeated Ahriman - or has he? Slowly he learns there is a lot more to the legend of Ahriman than he first believed. So starts a complicated journey of self-discovery for Duncan, and along the way he reforges friendships and relationships with all his family and friends.

- What If, ~ 405.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Explicit Violence, non-con)
  A re-write of every Methos episode. *g* Looking at his relationship with Duncan, and the impact his association with Duncan has on the Watcher Organization. Includes all the characters in the Highlander universe.

Wow, just wow! I often wish they had shown her version on the show! :P For example her version of the Horsemen episodes (Methos actually gets to ask Duncan for help, even if it still goes downhill from there), but especially her version of the Ahriman arc (who's interested: Richie survives - but more important for me: her explanation for Methos' absence). I really, really love that series and yes, that's the third story of my top three list. ^^

- Betwixt the Alders and Elms, ~ 5.000 words (PG-13)

Interesting concept about unicorns. *evil grin*

- A Trout in the Milk, ~ 9.000 words (Slash, Adult)
  Fishcakes and Ryebread, ~ 12.000 words (Slash, Adult)

Highlander/X-Files Crossover. Well written and I really like Skinner's POV - not to speak about the Methos whump, even if it's mostly off screen.

- Brothers and Other Strangers, ~ 19.500 words (D/M Slash, NC-17)

Nice twist. After the Horsemen debacle Methos is emotionally so damaged that he suppresses his Immortal identity completely and forgets everything. What is Duncan to do?

- The Matchmaker, ~ 20.000 words (D/M Slash, NC-17, Explicit Violence)

Duncan goes missing and a reluctant Connor has to take 'young' immortal Adam Pierson with him on the search. That constellation brings a lot of laughs alone, add to that Connors tries as matchmaker ... *lol* There's kind of a sequel, "The Hunt" (~ 44.500 words), that retells "The Matchmaker" from Methos' POV in the first half and then goes further in the storyline.

- Game Over, ~ 500 words (D/M, PG)

I'm impressed how anybody is capable to put so much emotion in such a short piece!! *sniff* This fic always makes me want to hide under my bedcover and cry for a while.

Also not the best writing style I've ever seen, but I enjoy some of her stories nevertheless. Yes, you're guessing right, the stories are concentrating on Methos heavily. :P

- Duty, ~ 7.500 words (Gen, Mature Content)
  AU. Now is the time of the Gathering. The Immortals will finally find out their true purpose, but at what cost?

- A Farewell to Kings (Gen, Mature Content, Explicit Violence)

From all of her writings the series I like most. AU. Another version of what could happen to let the world know about Immortals. You just have to laugh about the "Fan Clan MacLeod". *g*

* 1: A Farewell to Kings, ~ 22.500 words
    * 2: A Farewell to Gods, ~ 15.500 words
      This story picks up where A Farewell to Kings left off. Methos is off to school and trying to hide his Immortality.
    * 3: A Farewell to Myths, ~ 8.500 words
      Methos changes identities again after being 'outted' as an Immortal while in Medical school. Why would he think things would be any easier as an Interpreter?
    * 4: A Farewell to Secrets, ~ 6.500 words
      Methos returns to Oregon to visit Allen, Sam, and Rocky.
    * 5: A Farewell to Mysteries, ~ 5.000 words
      After working with the Watchers on the Methos chronicles, an imposter comes forward as 'Methos' much to the dismay of the Watchers and Methos' friends.

- Gilded Cage, ~ 24.000 words (Gen, Mature Content, Explicit Violence)
  The Watchers create a more pleasant Sanctuary but the ‘volunteers’ don’t want to be there! Character death.

- The Methos Chronicles (Gen + Het, M/OFC, Mature Content, Explicit Violence)
  A series of Methos oriented stories with several crossovers thrown in for even more fun!

I never really read the last couple parts as I'm no fan of "Relic Hunter". I like the other parts more or less and mostly enjoyed reading them.

- The Perversion of War, ~ 6.500 words (Ares/Methos, hints of Kronos/Methos, NC-17)
  Death on a Horse offers his services - all of them - to a God.

Yes, it's a Horsemen story, kind of - but completely harmless ... more or less ... shameless PWP - and a crossover with Xena. Loved Kronos' reaction! *g*

- What's An Honorable Man, ~ 169.000 words (Het + Slash, M/OFC, M/OMC, D/M, NC-17, Violence)
  "What's an Honorable Man?" is a 4-part epic that follows our favorite immortal, Methos, over the course of more than 500 years as he meets the same soul inhabiting different people as they live different lives in different times.
