Further Ramblings

This time, about food.

I'm re-reading a book I bought in January 2005, before my cancer diagnosis. I think I was drawn to it because I already sensed there was something wrong with me, and I was looking for a way to fix it myself, without doctors. And I was happily trying to follow the suggestions in the book until the time I was whacked upside the head with surgery, chemo, etc.

The book is If the Buddha Came to Dinner by Hale Sofia Schatz. The idea is to stop thinking about eating/dieting and, instead, to concentrate on nourishing yourself. Find a copy in your library or used book store if this quote sounds familiar to you: "Today, our principal relationship to food is either one of denial and deprivation or total indulgence."

A few more quotes: "Like most things really worth having, nourishment isn't a quick fix but a long-term commitment to yourself." "Each time we feed ourselves is an opportunity to practice self-love, compassion, and reverence for our spiritual nature."

Even though I haven't done everything she advocates, the book re-directed my thinking about food and my life.
