We have a new niece

Not that we're exchanging any of the old ones!

Miss Hayley Christine has arrived and, judging from the photos April posted of her, the "ham gene" runs in the family. No matter where the photographer was standing, no matter how she was being held, Hayley was looking right at them. Flirt. Well, she comes by it honestly. Her mother was the same as a baby and child. Heck, her mom is still that way. (But since you all have seen photos of my mugging in our show, I can't really claim to be any better.)

April and her husband, Tony, look tired but happy. My ex sister-in-law is too young to be a grandma, and her face says it's been too long since there was a baby to hold in the family. My brother, who's been out of his daughter's life for many years now -- her choice, not his, although she might claim it's his because the divorce was his choice -- well, anyway, he's feeling pretty hurt. And I'm feeling stuck in the middle, as usual, wishing there was some way to bridge a gap that time hasn't healed.

I sent books to her this morning, Madeleine and a couple of Sandra Boynton board books. And I wish they didn't live so far away, so that I could give my niece and her daughter a hug now and then.

If you're wondering why no photos are appearing here, the photo-sharing service April used doesn't allow downloads. Grrrr. Oh, well. You'll get to see her eventually. For now, just accept my completely unbiased report that she's incredibly beautiful and intelligent. And some day, she'll be here in cyberspace, in some yet-undreamed show's fandom, writing wonderful things -- and who knows what kind of forums she'll have for sharing her squee with others. Oh, well, I can only hope she finds a group of people as nice as all of you.

Happy weekend, everyone.
