Mini-reviews of recent books I've read:

"Child of the Jungle:  The True Story of a Girl Caught Between Two Worlds" by Sabine Kuegler:
A very interesting account of the childhood of the daughter of a missionary family living among an isolated Indonesian tribe called the Fayu.  I went in with an expectation and interest in hearing about the culture clash and adjustments when she returned to the "civilized" Western world.  As it turns out, the majority of the book is a narrative of her time among the Fayu, which was by no means disappointing, as their culture and viewpoints are fascinating.  Definitely worth reading.

"When We Get to Surf City:  A Journey Through America in Pursuit of Rock and Roll, Friendship, and Dreams" by Bob Greene
:
A fun and inspiring book about life on the road with the oldies surfer band of Jan and Dean as told by one of their backup singers.  Even though most of the music and groups referred to are before my time, they are certainly famous enough that I knew them (or OF them) anyway.  The subtitle is definitely an accurate summary of the book.  It is a celebration of friendship, how music brings people together and evokes memories, and small town America in the summertime.  The stories of Jan's struggles to continue with his musical career and overcome the disabilities caused by the auto accident at the height of his career are amazing and heart-touching.

In other news, the TV series "Burn Notice" has completely taken over my brain.  It's such a fun combination of genres:  a spy thriller/mystery that is dramatic, funny, and with the occasional touch of a twisted sort of spy romance.  I'm waiting impatiently for my S1 DVDs to arrive in the mail...

The speedometer on my car randomly broke the other day while I was driving around.  How does that happen?  Hmph.  I'm going to have to take it in, though I'm not sure if not knowing my speed would mean I speed more or less than I usually do.  It actually makes me more careful to not outpace other cars, so maybe it's better and I should leave it be?  ;-)

Hopefully it doesn't involve anything complicated and it will be cheap and quick to fix.  (Ha!  When does that ever happen?)
