Curious Chris
Mag7/ Hint of Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles
Chris begins to watch Maude Standish closely, and realises that the woman is more then she appears to be.

Alright, some violence, killing even, but I hope it's not to bad. Just a short piece about how Chris becomes curious about Maude and some things he has noticed about her.

Chris Larabee would never, ever admit that Maude Standish made him curious. He wondered more then once why a man like himself feared by many, throwing himself towards the danger, laughing at the face of death, and living adventures every day of his life; would find a selfish con woman to be such mystery.

Answer, Maude Standish was more then she appeared to be.

First time he had noticed something different, was when he caught her looking at him with such grief, longing and despair that he nearly took his breathe away. He knew that she hadn’t seen him when she looked at him, she saw someone else. But who did she see when she looked at him? Then her eyes had slipped to look at Ezra in action at the poker table, and her eyes held fear, devotion, love and determination.

Chris was intrigued when he realised that it wasn’t just Ezra that was hiding behind a mask and a wall. What secrets did that woman hold inside her head?

He started watching, really watching, whenever Maude visited town. He learned quickly that Maude wasn’t as defenceless as she painted out herself to be. In an unguarded moment when she thought no one saw her; she had taken apart Vin’s rifle in a matter of seconds. Just to check why it jammed, and she managed to located the problem, fix it and put the rifle back together before Vin even realised that he left his rifle behind, a few minutes later.

Chris was baffled and impressed when he realised that Maude managed guns and rifles like any devoted soldier at war did. What else could this woman do?

So, despite Buck’s wondering over his sudden interest in Maude and Josiah’s growling warning that Maude was his, he kept on watching. Never speaking to anyone of them about his findings about Maude and the woman behind the mask he had seen quick glimpses of.

There had been a situation, the one that involved guns and bad guys, and Ezra had somehow ended up both wounded and captured by the bad guys. The man that held Ezra at gunpoint had a strange tattoo on his arm. He was the one that was really dangerous, he was more insistent then the others that Ezra wouldn’t leave his arms alive. That it was necessary for the future for him to die, because he would destroy everything. The man had a maniac look in his eyes that told the rest of the Seven that his mental horses had taken a ride to freedom somewhere outside his head.

Maude Standish had entered the scene. The crazy man’s eyes widened and flinched.

“You’re supposed to be dead,” He stammered. “He said you weren’t in the game anymore,”

She had simply raised her eyebrows at his statement. “Trust no one,”

With a single shot, she managed to hit the crazy man in the middle of the head. Before he even hit the ground, she had managed to cover the ground that lead to her son.

If Chris hadn’t been so used to trying to interpret Maude Standish, he would have missed the tender look she gave Ezra when she helped him sit down before he fell flat on his face. The gentle, quick touch on his cheek filled with such love that only a mother could give, disappeared as the other lawmen closed rank on their wounded comrade.

Chris knew then, that there had be something really important, bad even to make Maude Standish hide all this love for her son, from her son.

It wasn’t until he accidently stumbled over the scene of Maude pressing a man towards the wall with a knife against his throat that he really began to realise the depth of the differences between the con woman’s different personas.

The man struck out with a blow hard enough to even knock the lights out of Josiah, and Chris had been prepared to move to her aid. But Maude took the punch, her head twisted to the side by the force. She was still standing, and she turned her head back with such fury that Chris took a step back in surprise. She hissed something to the man, and he shook his head, determination in his feature. She stuck her hand inside his jacket and came out with a bunch of bills that made her eyes narrow even more.

“Blood money to a traitor to us all,” Chris heard her shout.

The man had the same maniac look in his eyes as the man that had held Ezra hostage and Chris realised a few seconds after Maude did that this man would never stop with his mission.

Maude lowered her knife and shoved it into the other man’s heart before he was prepared; he gaped in surprise at her as she twisted the knife even deeper.

“The future,” She hissed loud enough for Chris to hear. “Is my son’s own!”

As the light went out of the man’s eyes, Maude let him slide to the ground, really not caring about the man she just killed as she turned and walked out of the alley without looking back.

In that moment, Chris knew without a doubt that Maude Standish was as dangerous as any of fellow lawmen and friends were. He had few answers to the mystery and even more questions than he had in the beginning of his decision to try to see the “Real” Maude Standish.

But with a grudging respect he realised that she was a soldier, fighting a war that her son knew nothing about. A war that Chris had no idea yet what it was about, but made him determined to watch her back more closely.

Maude Standish was a lone wolf, dangerous and quite capable to take of herself.

But a wolf needed a pack, and Chris had decided that Maude was apart of the pack that he had made up with his six friends, whether she wanted to or not.

Chris smiled as he realised that Maude Standish didn’t even know that she had gained a ally, maybe even someone to call a friend, in Four Corners.

He couldn’t wait to see what her reaction would be when she found out.

Right now, it was just amusing to see her glancing at him, curious over his change of heart towards her. It was going to be really funny to watch her try to figure this mystery out that she wasn't even aware that she had started herself.
