Elections in Israel Tomorrow: 20 Thought Fragments

Mar 27, 2006 09:36

1) Tomorrow, I'm going to vote for Meretz.

2) Like most Israelis, I am sick and tired of the cycle of violence.

3) Unlike most Israelis, I've not yet despaired of finding a resonable solution to the violence.

4) I don't think there will be peace in the Middle East in my lifetime, though.

5) I am more concerned about social and economic matters and less about the peace process.

6) Yes, I served in the military. 20 months of sex and horror.

7) I didn't like being a soldier, but I'm thankful for the experience.

8) The military experience strengthened my liberal leanings.

9) Actually, most of my friends consider me a "radical leftist".

11) But I think that the Palestinian resistance is more terrorist than freedom-fighting.

12) And no, I don't like Palestinians. It's hard to live here and like them.

13) Doesn't mean I don't think they should be honored as humans with freedoms and rights. My emotional response is one thing. My analysis is different. Fetch and Talker sitting on a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g.

14) I am equally annoyed by foreigners "supporting Israel" and those "opposing Israel". Bigots.

15) I generally think that Israel's a nifty country, with good people, reasonable democractic processes, and a resilient culture. I like it here. It's good here.

16) I don't like Israeli men, though. But I do like Israeli food.

17) When outside of the country, I often hide being Israeli because many find it a shameful thing to be.

18) Fuck them.

19) I don't use the f word often. It's such a military thing to do. Soldiers curse all the time, letting their frustration pour into the harshest and dirtiest words. It's one way of coping with the horrific experience of serving in the Israeli army.

20) On the day of my release from army service, I promised myself to only use the f word and its variants under dire circumstances, or preferably, not at all. That was about a decade ago.
