This was odd. Today, as I walked in to a downtown Birmingham parking ramp, I walked by a young man around my age who very deliberately made eye contact and said, "Hello". I returned the greeting, but as I continued to walk to my car, I was confused. Did I know him? Why couldn't I seem to remember?
The next person I encountered was an elderly man. He also very deliberately said hello.
It seemed strange. To be clear, there was nothing in either man's manner to indicate that he was flirting with me. It was just a casual, friendly greeting. I understand there are places in the South where this would be perfectly normal, but this is Michigan. It is perfectly normal for strangers to pass by eachother without a word. This also happened in the middle of day. I understand that if a woman encounters a man alone in a parking structure at night, he might make a point to be nice so she won't feel threatened.
I don't know. Maybe, I'm thinking about this too much.
